Epox Socket7 MB and drivers question! Need performance increase

HI there,

I'm currently waiting for an Epox KT333 MB and DDR 333 ram system, but in the meantime I'd like to get the best performance out of my system. I have an Epox Socket 7 Motherboard EP-51 MVP3E-M (ie. Via Apollo MVP3 chipset) with K6-2 300, and was wondering how would be the best way to get the most out of my board without sacrificing stability. I've done a format of my HD lately and clean win98SE install. Should I install new drivers (I think it's a 1999 bios date also). I also have a Seagate Barracuda (one of the first to come out so think it's a 5400rpm) and would also like to get the best out of my hard drive. Has anyone done any overclocking of the processor and has it made a difference. I'm also running a Gforce2 MX 400 64meg...would overclocking this with the NVmax help? Thanks for any suggestions.

Old epox boards weren't particularily stable to start with, overclocking isn't the best idea. K6s never overclocked well, although they were multiplier unlocked, so you may be able to raise the fsb. You are severly cpu limited in that setup, so get a new cpu before you even think of o/cing the video.

I don't think there's really much you can do to make that system perform much better, you might try overclocking it but the old AMD chips aren't very good overclockers...also, overclocking that geforce2mx isnt gonna help much, since it is definitely limited by the slow CPU

Thanks for the reply guys. I don't think I'll touch it now. I can't wait to upgrade to my new setup. It's long overdue.

I have a MVP3 based motherboard (Ozzo-really Chaintech) which origionally came with a K62-300. I bought a K62+ 450 from Tigerdirect for $35 and it is a great improvement. It overclocks to 550 with no problems. I think this gives the most improvement for the buck provided you have 128 Meg of memory.
