Thanks stgdic although it's weird because even when my processor was on default (2200mhz), the EpoX still put me on 1.5v.(Although I don't care since I'm O/Cing it)

Epox boards always tend to give bit more voltage for cpu and ram on auto settings.

I have notice this on several Epox baords I have have owned even at default settings.

You can either leave it on Auto or set it manually in BIOS.

New BIOS out dated 3rd January 06,Use Magic Flash to download it.

I've no idea on what it fixes or updates, but it installed ok on my PC.

I have a friend who has this board and an outdated Bios, but no floppy drive. I was wondering what people's opinions were of updating the Bios using the MagicFlash utility. Is it safe to use? Also, is it a good idea to update to jump ahead to a much newer Bios or should you only skip ahead 2 at a time?

I've had no problems using MagicFlash. I'd recommend jumping to the newest BIOS.... flashing the board a whole bunch of times is just asking for trouble.

I just got this board, and I'm wondering what nforce4 driver components I need to install? Should I install everything? For instance, if I'm not using RAID, should I still install the RAID drivers anyway? I've heard to avoid the firewall and IDE stuff...is that necessary?

Yes safe to use,I disabled my anti-virus and closed my browser and MSN before flashing to be on safe side.

Just install the 6.70 chipset drivers from Nvidia's website. No need to install the Nvidia SW IDE driver.Don't install the Nvidia firewall.

But I should install everything else besides those things, is what you're saying?

The Nvidia 6.70 drivers have everything you need.So just install them.

Link.

When you go to install the IDE drivers in the 6.70 package you get an option to install Nvidia SW IDE driver, you can select no,it will use Windows default drivers.

The Nvidia firewall software is on the Epox CD ,I would not install that.

Btw the Nvidia SW IDE drivers are ok in general to install, but some people get problems.
I'm using it with no problems with my single SATA drive, anyway if you want to play safe don't install it.

Don't install the RAID drivers.

Mem, hey well i've been out of the picture for a while for x-mas break and was wishing i'd come back to a solution but oh well. So anyway before I respond to some previous posts, i'd just like to mention that as a last resort I sent my CPU off to AMD, and of course it passed all tests w/ flying colors...just as I figured. It's back in now & froze w/in 20 minutes.

Epox recently told me to change my PSU, but that is probably pointless (?). Has anyone else w/ an X2 and the same problem tested w/ multiple power supplies to rule that out???

In regards to some other posts, here are some things I've tried:

- several versions of the nVidia nforce drivers (all those I could find), which includes all different options during the install (with & without the SW driver, firewall, etc.), so it doesn't appear to be an nvidia driver problem

- Win2000; WinXP Pro w/ SP2 preinstalled, have even (as Epox directed) installed oldest version of XP home & performed the SP1 update & applied the USB patch

- I'm using the 9NPA+SLI board (essentially same chipset?) although I've used 2 other 9NPA+ULTRA boards w/ the same problem

-disconnected ALL USB devices and enabling USB 2.0....still the same problem, although large downloads w/ a USB wireless adapter seem to cause more frequent freezing. Freezing is less frequent w/ my external 2.0 hard drive during large transfers.

- have always had SMART disabled

For those who haven't seen my old posts, I've changed every piece of hardware, some things several times, except my PSU....well that & I haven't tried a single core Athlon. For every piece of hardwire, I've used all the different drivers I could find & even taken out unnecessary hardware. I've changed nearly every BIOS setting in every menu such as turning off all non-crucial things like audio, CNQ, & legacy devices, have changed every voltage at nearly every voltage combination, & have underclocked the RAM & CPU just in case. I haven't changed the RAM timing or settings much since I'm not familiar w/ them, but have tried 2 brands of RAM.

Anyone have any idea why large downloads w/ a USB wireless adapter is almost a sure freeze, at least on my system? MEM, were you refering to something like a voltage problem worsened by high loads a while back? Could a voltage tolerance explain why it works properly only under USB 1.1??? But again it freezes w/ no USB devices attached anywhere.

Anyone tried modifying the boot.ini file to boot w/ one core???
Anyone tried another nforce 4 board??

Sorry for the long message but hopefully some of it will help. I also just called Epox & was told they are working hard on the problem right now. I've gotten to know them all well over the months & I might actually believe them. anyway that's all for now

Curran did Epox confirm there is a known problem with USB 2.0?

All I did with my Epox board was installed OS via WINXP SP2 slipstreamed CD,used 6.70 Nvidia drivers with no USB patch, only installed X2 dual core AMD driver,I did not bother with the Microsoft hotfix as mine was running sweet,Cool and Quiet is disabled and I did not install the C&Q software.

I don't deny the fact that many people like you have the USB 2.0 problem and I just want to find out what's the cause so we can help others that have the same problem.

Yeah I was thinking it might be some sort of USB power issue under load, but that is only a guess on my part.

Mem, hey well i don't remember them ever directly saying it was a USB 2.0 issue versus say an X2 issue, although they have vaguely mentioned they have heard of problems specific to the X2. Speaking w/ their tech support it seems they still haven't pinpointed it.

I am curious about the USB power issue, but am sort of ruling that out since it freezes w/ no devices connected. For several weeks I've been using only the onboard LAN b/c I was wondering about a network issue causing it. However, sometimes it may go for a couple days w/out freezing, or sometimes it's very frequent...w/ & w/out the nvidia firewall.

...am really curious about modifying the boot.ini file & booting w/ only one core...if that works, then probably only Epox can fix it b/c I surely would have no idea. Can we confirm this is an X2 problem and/or if it's related solely to Epox?? Didn't someone mention similar problems solved already by other board manufacturers? I've honestly tried nearly everything I can think as far as available hardware/software/drivers go.

My guesses are that it's an X2 or Nforce4ultra issue, or a combination, but I haven't checked message boards for other manufacturers.

Without reading this entire thread, can anyone tell me if there are any major issues with this board I should be aware of if I'm considering purchasing it for an opteron 165?

Several of us have seen system hangs during big USB2.0 transfers (eg, to an external hard drive) when using a dual core processor (like the Opteron 165) .

Hey all - I didn't read this thread very thoroughly before I installed my new motherboard, and I ended up installing Nvidia Firewall. Is there anyway to uninstall this or disable it short of doing a completely new reinstall of Windows? I'm running XP Pro. Thanks!

I think you can disable it in bios.

Anyone having trouble with sound?
I have headphones connected to the headphone out (green slot) and I'm getting NO SOUND. Installed Realtec '97 Codec, CD stock and latest online..

No matter what I do, I get no sound. Is it just a bad board? It won't get to user select screen when I'm using a PCI-sound card anymore so...

imhungry,

i know this sounds obvious, but just in case is the onboard sound enabled in the bios?
also, do you have front panel audio connected to the motherboard's jumper's? I'm guessing no since you were using the rear jack.

Did you ever try the realtek audio before installing the PCI sound card? Do the realtek drivers appear to be installed correctly? open up the realtek audio software (the one with the EQ & speaker setup) & post what it says under the general tab or button.

The onboard sound has two options
Auto , and disabled. I have it set on Auto.
The front panel audio keys (plugs) aren't plugged in, and I used the PCI sound card solely because the integrated sound wasn't working.

I've tried the sound drivers that were on the epox 9npa+ ultra's CD, and well as the newest one's from epox's site, neither work.

Just wondering, anyone with an epox mobo see an ENABLED option for the realtek '97 in the bios?

I've only got auto, and disabled.
