For the most part, WinXP is as easy to use as Win9x is. If you are a basic user then you are all set, you won't need to look for the "deeper" functions of the OS to do what you want. If you are an advanced user then you are still all set because you probably know all you need to know to make finding things in XP "intuitive". It's a no-lose situation. Also, you could always go Win2K, I still love that OS also. I just favor XP more.

I'd sell you one of my 8 XP licenses but they were given to me by M$ for beta testing and they can't be registered to any other users. Sorry.

It's not EVERY time, it's one time out of 6. Five activations go fine, on the sixth expect to make a phone call. It lasts all of 3 minutes, is toll free, and is relatively smooth. I don't think there is much to complain about. If you want to use 9x go ahead, just don't say you weren't warned...
OK Seeking, then what messed up version of WinXP did I get from Microsoft? I'd LOVE for that to be true - I had to call after my second activation, only the first one activated online fine. I'm really lost here, I've had to do every single activation since then through the phone. Maybe my CD key is on a different level than others.

zettler, the only thing I'd see preventing you from doing that is getting good Linux drivers for the Leadtek Winfast. I haven't seen any, but then again, I haven't looked VERY closely. The config for setting it to record TV in Windows is very straightforward - it'd be great if I could get my own Leadtek card working under Linux, then the only thing I'd need Windows for would be gaming.

I don't know... Maybe someone else mistakenly registered your key by accident once before (or maybe not accidentally if they were trying to crack a new key for their own use) and now that key is flagged? It's a longshot but possible. I know it's not typical for people to have to go through what you are going through though. I have even swapped out motherboards and video cards without doing a clean install and not had to reactivate WinXP.

Next time you have to call to activate maybe you could ask the rep. why you are forced to do that each and every time like you are.

Then I should really figure out what the heck is going on with my copy. Here's a quick Q: does reactivation kick in after a certain amount of hardware changes, OR a certain number of hardware changes within a certain amount of time? If I change one thing at a time over many months, will it not ask to be reactivated? Or does it not work that way?

Thanks for that. I didn't know that this card had that issue, as all the comments had been pretty favorable here. Anyway, its not something I will be doing anytime soon, as I have enough to keep me busy!

At least I got my new PC running but its not as fast as I thought it would be. Its scoring less than 11,000 in 3d marks 2001 SE - less than what my first PC we built is doing....
