EPOX 8KTA3 and NVIDIA

I have just Upgraded to an EPOX 8KTA3 Motherboard and am having problems with my Hercules Prophet 2 MX PCI Graphics Card (NVIDIA). The Graphics card worked OK with my old Motherboard and I have the latest Drivers for it. The problem is that after about 4 or 5 minutes the Screen freezes and the only thing I can move is the Mouse, the only way to unfreeze it is to re-boot the machine. I have tried it with both WIN 98SE and WIN ME, with the same results. I know that the problem is the Graphics Card because when I remove the Hercules (NVIDIA) Drivers and re-boot without them I have a 640X480 Screen but everything else works OK . Do you know of any conflict between the Epox and NVIDIA Drivers? Thanks for any information that you can give.

Had a quick look , but couldn't find anything, I'll try again. I don't know if it's related or not, but Windows is also having trouble finding Drivers for a 'PCI BRIDGE', any ideas what a PCI Bridge is, and where I can find the Drivers?

Red, sorry, but I'm 100% there were some posts here about GF and 8K7A.
What you discribe sounds like a missing driver. As Apple said: u sure the AMD miniport driver is in? You can download the latest one from AMD directly.

OK, I've re-installed Drivers (about 20 times), re-formatted, downloaded Drivers etc etc, but still no joy. I'm about to throw either my Graphics Card or the EPOX out the window (or BOTH) and go back to my IBM, unless somebody has any other ideas. Sorry if I sound annoyed but I've spent the whole weekend , plus lots of dollars trying to get a faster machine, and ended up with a piece of non-usable junk.

redbaron: For what it's worth, I just upgraded to the same mobo over the weekend and I also have an Nvidia-based video card. (I have a CardExpert GeForce2 MX.) I'm not experiencing any of the problems you describe. I notice you are using a PCI card, while mine is AGP. Just a long shot but have you tried the card in a different slot?

Also, as far as drivers go, I'm using 12.6. There are a lot of different versions available and people have reported varying results depending on which version they tried. I recommend you try different set of drivers.

here
Epox 8KTA2 and ELSA geforce2mx,
or Epox intel zx chipset mb and same ELSA geforce2mx,
similar problem to yours - system freeze suddnely without doing anything, or scrolling in ie/netscape, or during the initialization of the pond demo.
tried different agp speed, agp drive value, via driver, nvidia driver, still cannot solve the problem.

later found this (posted by someone in one thread):
PWM incompatible Power Supply problem

So I conclude both Epox and ELSA are bad guys.
I won't buy Epox or ELSA anymore.

Now I'm using Radeon LE on 8KTA2 - perfect.

redbaron, I assume you have looked in device manager and do not have any irq conflicts? I'ts odd that it works for 4-5min and then freezes. I would think that it would freeze instantly. Seems to me that there is some sort of heat generated problem.

Do not download AMD drivers for the EPOX 8KTA3, its a Via chipset and not an AMD based motherboard!!
Also, I had an Asus Gf1 DDR in my set up for 2 weeks with no problems.
What bios do you have? There was some earlier issues that were taken care of with bios fixes, but thats been at least 4months ago.

Thanks for the input. I can't recall which BIOS I flashed, just know it's the latest one off the EPOX Website.
Kingofcomputers, your link was very interesting, could switching to a VooDoo5 solve this problem? Also if this problem is known to EPOX and NVIDIA, why don't their Upgraded Drivers fix the problem?

I don't have other agp card to test, can't tell.
I'm sure it's either elsa or epox's fault, since that elsa geforce2mx even gives same problem on intel chipset mb, so I can say it's not via's fault.

that page has explained that it's hardware problem on some nvidia cards and some motherboards,
so I don't think bios update or driver can solve this problem.

I know someone who bought asus geforce2mx and epox 8kta2, got monitor goes off when starting windows problem.

I've never heard anyone who bought inno3d has a single problem,
but I'm afriad to try inno3d on my epox,
and the price of radeon le becomes better than any geforce2mx,
so I decide to try readeon le - no problem now.

I believe that nvidia is too aggresive to release new hardware quickly without thorough testing.

Thanks for the info Kingofcomputer, after what seems an endless procession of Drivers and Upgrades I've decided to give up on the NVIDIA based Hercules graphics Board. I ordered a VooDoo5 5500 this morning, so hopefully I can get my machine running properly again when it arrives. Thanks for all the advice.
Regards
Baron
