I want to buy a new CPU and video card for my aging system but I don't want to spend too much. I have an EPoX 8K7A, socket A motherboard. Would an Athlon Xp, say, 2000+ or higher work on it? With the cost of the Athlon XP's going down, I would like to breathe new life into my system, maybe upgrading the CPU and Case(To a cheiftec Dragon thingy from newegg) now and my Video card(To a Radeon 9500) later.

So...Do you think it will work on my motherboard? Or should I wait a few months and buld a whole new system(Hammer)?

Thanks for any input.

flash to the newest bios revision, and your board should have no problems with the athonxp

this link shows the supported cpus for epox boards

nah... its not difficult at all

1. create a bootable floppy disk
2. copy flash utility to the floppy (download from epox.com)
3. copy the new bios file to the floppy (again download from epox)
4. boot the system with the floppy drive
5. run the bios flash utility
6. depending on the version/type of flash utility this step can be different... it could just run and flash automatic after "step 5" or you may have to follow onscreen prompts and type in the name of the new bios file
7. when its finished reboot your pc
8. go into the bios set everything at default... it reads something like "load setup defaults" or "load optimal defaults"
9. go through the bios and reset everything how you want it (must you will just leave at default)
10. all done

I have the EPOX 8K7A+ (just adds the raid controllers onto the 8k7a) and Epox just told me that with a revision 1.1 board and the newest bios flash and you will be good up to XP2200+. The revision is in the lower left corner by the pci slots. With this board all you need to do is download the bios update to a floppy and leave in the floppy drive when you reboot. When you do reboot you will see a prompt(option) to push alt-f2 and this will take you right to the on board bios flash program. Don't be afraid to do this just be sure not to do it when there is a chance of a power outage for any reason(unless you have a good ups). I have flashed flashed hundreds of desktops and laptops and haven't lost one yet !!!! LOL ( well knock on wood !!! he he ). Good Luck !!!! Bios Info below:
