well for one thing did a quick 3d mark 2001 on his system and got under 4000 and that was under w98 with a 64MB gts 2 pro , i know thats bad

and the other thing when we try and set up a music cd its like it freezes and it still looks like its working but nothing moves. I just did it on my system and i have the same burner and mine went fast. he has a 1.4tbird and i have a 933 p3. makes me wonder

there are several patches drivers to install, they all should come on the disc with the motherboard, or you can download newer ones from amd/via/microsoft

1.4 should be 10.5 multiplier x 133mhz fsb, right????

did u set jumper jp3 to 1 and 2 jumped?

that sets your pci bus multiplier from 2/3 of 133 to 1/3 of 133

sure made my drives freak out before i did so........

so you're having problems burning...i did too...for some reason the newest versions of nero and easy cd don't work...freezes up...so now i'm just using the older version of the easy cd creator...that came with the burner.

If you have JCLK1 set to default which is 2/3
then that might be your problem

on a 1.4gig, it should "NOT" be set to default
it should have 2 and 3 jumpered, not 1 and 2

you'll blow your cards up like that over time

no, it's not bad. you are thinking in terms of 3dmark2000 scores, 3dmark2001 scores are much lower. without tweaking, a score of mid to high 3000's is about right for that system

Yes, your 3DMark2001 score looks mighty fine to me! As for the CD-R anomaly, I'd say that's an issue with VIA's poor DMA handling over the IDE bus. Some burners/CR drives may not be affected, but some, especially *old* burners, seems to have more problem.

In my case, I just avoided this DMA/performance issue altogether and went SCSI. Yes, it's expensive but IMO pays off in long term with near perfect reliability. So far, I never had performance issues or conflict with multiple devices over a SCSI chain. Having said that, however, I use one IDE hard drive for mass storage. Very inexpensive, and good performance overall. I just worry when I have to use more than two IDE devices....

BTW, what other IDE devices do you have on this computer? And what make/model is your CD-R burner?

couldn't agree more.........

Burning definetely benefits from SCSI

I'm using a Teac CDR58S which was one of the few SCSI 8x burners
that I could find that actually INCLUDED the adaptec card.
added a CD32S reader from Teac and since then all has been
bliss.

My combo will also read copy protected discs for backup

Heck, for that matter, I can cruise the net and even
play a game of quake arena while burning.......

Yes, IDE is pretty much chipset and driver dependent, and with VIA coming out with different south bridge in the past year or two, some relatively new, it's reliability seems somewhat spotty. We just got rid of the SBLive! vs. southbridge conflict issue. Also, consider that when you jump onto a new chipset board, whether it be AMD or Intel or VIA or ALi, you're dealing with ANOTHER southbridge contoller that has yet to mature in terms of hardware bug and driver update.

SCSI, on the other hand, has been out for ages, and driver maturity and support has been there long enough. I'm sure most of the bugs have been worked out by now :) I just basically transplant my SCSI gear from old to new motherboard, and never worry about dealing with a new IDE controllers.

But I say again, you can't ignore the cost efficiency of IDE-based HDDs. But man, I'd kill for a comparably inexpensive SCSI hard drive....
