epox 8k7a and athlon XP 1700+ = no boot!

hi all,

I had a 1.4 athlon and a epox 8k7a. My 1.4 got ruined in some travel so I bought a 1.47 athlon XP thinking that it would work. When I plugged the cpu in, reset the cmos, the cpu would detect and post, it would start the black windows XP login screen, but would freeze at the blue screen where i would normally login.

I also tryed to use the winXP cd to do the whole disk repair proggie, but it locks up right where I type R to enter the repair mode.

Also, my old cpu will run at 1000mhz, my heatsink fell off during travel and chipped it. The point is, the old cpu is working now, but the new one isn't. help me please :->

my old sys:
athlon 1.4
epox 8k7a
crucial 256*2=512 mb DDR
ibm 40gb 65gxp
sound blaster value
netgear nic
leadtek gf2ultra 64

my only change:
Athlon XP 1700+

Thanks,

Tranz

Have you tried updating the BIOS, just check there (go here) and it has a BIOS update for 3/25/2002.

Also take everything out, except CPU/RAM/Video/HDD. Try to boot with those and see what happens and let us know.

I did update my bios to that newest version before i even put it in.

I took my soundcard, nic, and cdrom out. It still locks up right before my login screen comes up...my keyboard blinks and then all the lights go right out. I can see the pointer, but my mouse is also locked up. It also locks up using the winXP cd right when you hit R to get in the Recovery Console, same type of lockup...

All I am basically doing is changing cpus. old athlon 1.4 to a new 1.47...you wouldn't think that it would be that much trouble...lemme know if you have any suggestions...

After you resetted the BIOS, have you gone back into to make changes to whatever some of those settings should be like before?

Maybe something in BIOS causing problems after a reset. For example, before in your BIOS you had ACPI turned off, when you reset it, it turned it back on, Windows might not liked that......... It could something like that, not saying that is the problem.

Well...I think I have all the bios setting as they were before I switched cpus.

WinXP posts....loads..and then locks up at the monitor refresh point when the login screen comes up...the keyboard lights go off and so does the mouse...

Has anyone upgraded to an athlon XP processor using my epox 8k7a mb?? if so, holla back...

thx again,

tranz😕
