Epox 4BDA2+ Questions..... olfart care to give a little help?

B4 I go searching.
Epox doesnt have the latest bios on their website.

I currently have the bios that shipped with the board.
Dated 02/05/2002

Is there a newer one?

I used to have a link to an EPOX message board that EPOX tech people posted help / tweaks for Epox
boards.
Anyone happen to have a link to that messageboard?

Darn RAID craps out on me when I overclock, Im using IDE1 now.
So much for the +, I shoulda just bought the non-raid board!
anyone know of a solution to this?

BTW: Im at
2.4 Northwood @ 2.8ghz / 1.75v
DDR Turbo / Cas2 (Corsair pc2700 w/heat spreaders)
PCI / AGP locked at 33/66
Temp. 77f deg / Im using a Koolance watercooled case.

It makes it to windows & runs at 2.9ghz, but its a little "flaky".
Guess Im gonna need to do a voltage mod. 😉
I think 1.85v should give me a shot at 2.9 - 3.0ghz.

Im just not sure if I should put a resitor on the mobo or do the pin trick to the cpu.

Does the cpu pin trick allow voltage adjustments or will I be at 1.85v no matter what?

If I understand correctly, if I mod the mobo, I can still do voltage adjustments in the bios to go to 1.85v or higher.
Correct?

(Im not gonna go much over 1.85v & Im not comfortable doing that, hopefully I can stay at 1.85v)

WARNING,
Ive read on other forums that people were Killing their cpus after awhile with voltages at 2.0v & higher!
So if you're at 2.0v , better watch those temps!

I have the RAID version, but dont use RAID (the non RAID was not in stock when I bought it). Cant be much help there. I use that same BIOS version that you have. It is the newest last I checked. As far as voltage goes, you can go -.1 to +.35 from stock, which works out to 1.4 - 1.85 from a 1.5 Vcore CPU. 1.85 should be available with no pin mod.

2.4 @ 2.8? Sweet overclock! Thats only a 116 FSB? Be sure you use the 3:4 option (DDR266) to get you to 312DDR speed.

The board "undervolts".

You can set it up to 1.85v in the bios but in reality it only does 1.75v.

You need to do a voltage mod if you want a "real" 1.85v setting.

oldfart,
When I choose the +.35, reboot then go back into the bios & check system health its really only 1.75v.

Doesnt yours do this?

Most forums Ive read about the 4BDA2 , everyone else reports the same "undervolting".

Never went that high, but I dont doubt it. I've heard the same about every 845 board. Dont know why. I have mine @ 1.65. MBM 5 reads it as 1.63. 1.675 is read as 1.65. I'll try 1.85 later and see what I get for a reading.

Oh BTW:

<< 2.4 @ 2.8? Sweet overclock! Thats only a 116 FSB? Be sure you use the 3:4 option (DDR266) to get you to 312DDR speed. >>

Yep Im running the ram at DDR266 with the stock 2.6v.

I wasnt 100% sure my Crucial PC2100 would do that, thats why I bought the PC2700 Corsair ram.
Just to make sure I had some "headroom" so to speak.

Wow!
Those 1.6a's are the best deal to come along in a very long time.
That cpu you got might do 2.6ghz with some morevoltage if youre already doing 2.4ghz @ 1.65v.

Youve got more willpower than me, I wouldve at least tried it by now. 😉

<< What cas timings? Can you go down to 1.5? >>

Im at CAS 2 with the 'turbo" settings.

Never tried going down to CAS 1.5.

I'll give it a shot.

I checked the voltages. On my 1.6 @ 2.4 @ 1.85 Vcore,
The BIOS read 1.80 @ boot
MBM5 reads ~ 1.79 - 1.81 idle or load.
What PS do you have? Do you have the extar 12V feed connected?

Ok, its at Cas 1.5, Im at the desktop & online.
Harldy a stability test but its doing it.

I wrote down all my other settings.
Remember I just got my board so Ive gotta go look since I dont have my settings memorized. LOL 😉

FSB 117
Mem Frequency DDR266
AGP/PCI Locked at 66/33
CPU voltage +.30
DDR Cas 1.5 - 6 - 3 - 2 "in that order from top to bottom in bios.

I also went & checked on my cpu voltage, its actually fluctuating between 1.76 & 1.77 with the +.30 setting.

Ive got a new PSU coming, this things +5v is down to 4.89v right now.
Im tempted to pull my other 400w PSU outta my AMD rig since that one never drops below 4.95 on the +5 no matter what.

But I really dont wanna pull that rig apart since its so stable.
I'll try & be patient & wait on my new PSU.

Yep, got both of the connectors plugged in.

Its a generic 420w PSU , its a TTGI - Traditional Technology Group Inc.
I stole it outta my wifes new case she bought for her new rig, she doesnt have all the parts yet, so I figured She wouldnt miss it. LOL

The one in my athlon rig is a Sparkle 400w that I bought to replace my 431w Enermax that had MAJOR trouble holding the +5v.

Since Im happy with my Sparkle in that rig, I ordered another one for my Intel Pc.

Ok, its at 5-2-2.

I can only go to +.30 then it goes back to +.10 .
It has my CPUs default voltage reading 1.55v

My board is revision 1.1 (at least thats what is printed down near the last PCI slot.)
Its a 4BDA2+ , I just got it from Newegg last Friday.

Heres why I was just assuming that the mobo was the reason why I cant get an actual 1.85v without a voltage mod.
Hard Forum

Heres the "cpu pin wrap" voltage mod.
Overclockers Forum

And heres the mod for the mobo that will get you up to 2.0v.
Vcore Mod. Epox EP-4BDA2+

I just tried 2.9ghz again & it locks shortly after getting to the desktop, so Im be willing to bet with a little more voltage, I can get that stable.

Im at 2.88ghz now, but take that with a grain of salt, cuz just cuz Im in windows & running Windows explorer, doesnt mean its completely stable.

BTW: Theres ABSOLUTELY NO WAY on earth I'll be trying anything more than 1.85v.
Getting an extra 100 - 200 mhz isnt worth risking frying my cpu.

Well I just spent 2hrs trying to put a little copper wire on my cpu to tie pins 1-2-3 & 4 together.
No luck for me.

I guess im not coordinated(sp?) enough to hold a magnifying glass hemostats & a small screwdriver all at the same time. LOL

I actually had it wrapped around the wires right several times, but each & every time when I tried to place the cpu in the socket, the darn wire would come off of one of the pins!

Words just cant describe how difficult it is to wrap those litlle buggers with a single strand of wire!
I give up for tonite.

Ive gotta work 10:30am - 10:30pm in the morning.

So Im still at 2.88ghz with all the settings listed above.

Im gonna start Prime95 & let it run until morning.

P.S. I wonder if I lower my DDR voltage to 2.5 if it'll raise the voltage value I get for my cpu?
Hmmmm.........

I got my system together a few days ago, three days of pain and misery later:

EpoX 4BDA2+ (love the board, nothing bad about it)
1.6A@2.2 (can't complain I guess, but I had my heart set on 2.4 & 400DDR)
512MB Samsung 2700 3:4 (I got a crappy stick of memory, can't run any aggressive settings, I can just tell the memory is killin me all my problems stem from changing memory settings and XP)

I think i'm gonna have to ditch XP for awhile till a SP comes out or something, seems REALLY finicky to me (Raid 0 BTW) and yes I am aware of the ATA133 issue
I can run @ 2.3 but Prime95 hates it and gives a hardware error
2.4 I wish 🙁

I am going to install tried and true w2k pro tomorrow and see if I can run anything above 2.25 w/o damn blue screens, i'm almost positive it will.
2.4 is highly unlikely though, as I believe the memory is holding me back.

Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

Go to epox.com select europe and english, there is one dated 4/22/02. No idea what it does. Is the 02/05/02 the version that came with your recently received board?

Quick update on my situation, sorry for the belated reply, sometimes work & life get in the way of my computer time. 😉

Ran prime95 Tortue test with no problems for 10hrs at
2.88ghz
DDR 266
Cas 1.5
5
2
2
AGP/PCI locked at 33/66

oldfart, you know what you just did to me dont ya? 😉
Im sure this cpu will 2.9ghz with a little more voltage & maybe 3.0ghz.
Im determined to do the voltage mod & get this thing to 3ghz.

But if I do, Ill probably have to run at CAS 2.

The darn thing will probably benchmark faster @ 2.88 / CAS 1.5
then it will @ 2.9 - 3.0ghz / CAS 2

If I have a choice Im choosing 3ghz / CAS 2 cuz that what I set out for when I built this "project" pc.
Then Im gonna have to live with the fact that it could actually be faster at a lower GHZ. LOL

Who knows, maybe Ill get lucky & be able to have 3ghz & CAS 2.

Well, right now its all wishful thinking until I get the patience to do try voltage mod again & see if it'll do 3ghz @ a REAL 1.85v.

Ill post an update when/if I can get it to go that high.

HFC,
I will look into that bios you suggested.

And YES, the 02/05/02 bios is the one my mobo shipped with.
