I was driving down 121 just off of the Dallas North Tollway last night, and witnessed something bizarre and wanted to get an opinion as to what exactly happened here :

A VW 'Eos', with dealer tags and some fat blond chick driving, was hauling butt as much as it could away from each light, and I noticed a steady (heavier under hard acceleration) stream of black smoke coming from the exhaust. My first thought was that it was a modded diesel or something like that, but coming back up beside it at the next light I noticed it said '2.0T', and I thought that was odd. So I decide to see how the thing would handle my SloFo (under the 70mph limit of course), and I pulled off into a free lane and just let it rip. The VW accelerated hard, but really couldn't get past me, and out of nowhere I start to hear what sounds like a super rapid fire machine gun shooting at a steel wall. BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG, and then BOOOOOOOOM!. That got my attention, so I brake and get behind it, and now instead of black smoke, I see a whitish/bluish cloud of noxious mess coming not only from the exhaust but also from the fenderwells up front, and the car is now making a more muted cacophony of grinding noises. I had someplace to be, so after a quick debate on whether I should stop and see what the hell happened, I just decided to go about my business.

Was this just some kind of result of massive abuse? What likely happened to first cause a bunch of black smoke, then all those insane noises, then white/blueish smoke? It might have been my imagination, but I also thought the hood looked dented when I passed it for the last time.

Haha, a test drive? Imagine pulling back into the dealer with that baby. "Um, it's not really what I'm looking for. Here's the keys."

White smoke = coolant. Blue smoke = oil. Black smoke = fuel.

Black smoke that got blacker on accel sounds like the mixture was waaay off. Never good on a boosted car. If it was running that rich, there was probably so much fuel that it was washing the bores clean of oil and contaminating the crank case, misfiring, etc. Somebody was probably modifying it and didn't know what they were doing. Add more fuel to go faster amirite?

The noise = blew a rod through the block or you were hearing a compression leak from a blown head gasket, and at that point it's obvious what the blue and white smoke was that followed.

One cylinder was having spark/fuel issues and polluting the O2 sensor with fuel, computer trimmed fuel to compensate and made the other cylinders lean = ping ping ping BOOM on a turbo car?

Sounds like the kind of person who ignores check engine light, uses 87 octane to save money, blasts the stereo and doesn't hear noises, and still races the car hard; yeah I'd call it abuse.

probably what exdeath said. car was running bad for unknown reason (would bet it was misfiring and the CEL was flashing), after too much abuse something gave.

Sad, it looked like a nice car :)
