ok so i traded a wii for a dell xps 600. (note i still have my other rig for gaming lol)

the dell xps has:
a 3.4 ghz single core pentium 4 processor (can be upped to a dual core)
2 gigs of ram
250 gig hard drive
6 fans
2 optical drives ( a cd and a dvd one)
sli support for 2 video cards
nvidia geforce 6800 256mb
650watt psu
and its a full size case that opens like a door on hinges
(also came with mouse, keyboard, speakers, lcd screen etc...)

i got it for my fiance. little problem is the video card is a little weak

i have a 9400gt 512mb lying around

I cant buy a new video card till next month so for now I have 2 choices:

1.keep the geforce 6800 gt in it

or

2. put my old 9400gt in it?

what should i do?

games she plays on it:
homefront
team fortress 2
portal
alien swarm
you know, mostly source and ue3 games.

You can put a GTX580 and those games will still run dog slow. (assuming that board has PCIE instead of AGP)

It depends which version of the 6800, depending on the resolution the extra 256MB make up the difference anyway.

I hate to burst your bubble...but you traded your Wii for what is basically a $99 computer...MAYBE with the video card, $150...but that's being generous.

Notice that this one does NOT have a discrete video card, but the 6800 cards sell for about $50 or so...

Still...if it's a good deal to YOU, then it's a good deal.
Be sure to verify that the Dell PSU will handle any extra power demand from the new video card before you install it.

That was a nice gesture to trade your Wii in to get a computer for your fiance, but it's really not that great of a computer. Perhaps for 10-year-old games, and web browsing it's fine.

You're going to end up paying for it in the end with your power bill though. P4s suck down the juice.

Edit: If you can upgrade it to a dual-core, it would be much nicer.

The Wii is horrible. All we did is play netflix on it and nothing else. A pc could play netflix in hd and the wii cant. Horrible. lol. Hell I run dead space on my itouch better than the wii can. My ipod touch 4g is a better gaming console than the wii. Thats sad...

Team Fortress 2, Alien Swarm, and Portal (all source games) run at a viable framerate [30-60fps is viable for me 🙂]. I had to drop the resolution though to the lowest but I can set all the settings to the highest settings. No AA or AF though.

Games run much better than the 6800 (its not a gt. its just...a blah card)

Note that the 9400gt was originally in my Inspiron 530 (my computer). I upgraded the video card to a gt240 ddr5 512mb and I can play crysis at high at a solid 30fps.

I'm probably gonna do some testing (I'm gonna hate this lol).
I'm going to see if putting my gt240 in it will make it run like my computer. I know the processor is not as fast as my computer. core2duo>pentium4 i know the talk lol.

Not trying to offend, but the Dell xps 600 is much stronger than that...

IBM/DELL
P4 3.2ghz/P4 3.4ghz
512mb ram/2gb ram
40gb hd/250gb hd
one dvd-rom/one dvdrw and one cdrw
xp os/xp os
Integrated ADI1981B codec/Dedicated Sound Blaster AudigyTM 2 ZS with Dolby 5.1
200 Watt PSU/650 Watt PSU
Intel 865G chipset graphics memory controller hub/Nvdia Geforce 6800
Mini sideways case thingy/Full Size "Gaming" Case
doesnt even support full size cards/supports 2 fullsize cards in SLI
1 fan?/6 fans

also it came with Speakers, a 19inch monitor 4:5ratio, dell multimedia keyboard, and a microsoft wireless mouse.

I decided to bold everything that's better in the xps600 than that IBM computer you posted.

btw. the xps600 is a 2005 pc not a year 2000 pc if that helps any.

my logic: if it plays team fortress 2 higher than 360p...its better than the wii. dont make me do a wii/dell comparison! oh damn you made me done it! 😛

But it's still Pentium4 processor...like I said though...if it's a good trade for you, then it's a good trade.

It wouldn't be for me though.

The keyboard/mouse/monitor combo probably pushed it over the top, but I wouldn't say it was a lopsided trade in favor of you by any means. Without the monitor I would probably say you got ripped off.

heres the thing. im more of a pc gamer. and my fiance wants to play with me online. thats why i made the trade. in my mind it was an amazing trade cause the pc is 4x stronger than the wii if not more. if i originally had a choice to buy this pc or a wii, i would have chose the pc. plus if i want to upgrade the pentium4 to a pentium d 3.4ghz i can do so for only 50$ (obeslete tech ftw 😀). plus the I traded with needed to get rid of the pc anyways cause his apartment was too small and he already had a laptop so I say fair deal on that one. he wanted a wii, and i wanted a pc to 1. game on and 2. to upgrade. pc gaming's always better anyways...

just a question. would it be optimized to use a pentium d 3.4 ghz with 2 gt 240's in sli?

No a Core 2 Quad possibly, but not a Pentium D.

Meh a used WII is worth $100, your system maybe $150 with the Monitor on Craigslist if you can find a sucker..err someone looking for that setup. Upgrading to a faster CPU for $50 for that system is stupid when you can get a C2D and Motherboard at the For Sale forum for $100 that'll run rings around the P4

Well, people have different needs, thats why trade exists. However, the market price is the only objective judge. And by those standards, its not quite an "epic trade win". Your friend could easily think that he made off like a bandit by trading a 3 generations old gaming PC for current day hardware.

On my rig: core2duo @ 2.5ghz, 2 gigs of ram, 300 watt psu, 600gb hd, geforce 240 ddr5 512mb, 19in monitor (1440x900 native)

I am running crysis at 30fps solid. Not at very high though, just at high. Dx9 to make it more stable. I play a game for the game, not to oogle at the water. (i have a long rant about that topic lol...)

And to the guy who said "newegg called". Its called craigslist. Or google shopping.

And to the guy who said source is a hog. I dub thee sir troll the third.
