Thinking about replacing my home server with a 2-bay NAS. Research has shown that QNAP and Synology are both highly recommended.

QNAP TS-212 $169 (currently on sale at NE)
Synology DS-212J $185-200 +/-

Leaning toward the QNAP since it's on sale. The DS-212J has essentially the same specifications and features.

Any reason to go with the Synology model over the QNAP?

I think you'd be happy with either one, both very capable devices. Set it up with RAID1 for drive failure protection.

For a little home NAS I think you will be happy with either one.

I use Synology in my home and could not be happier. The user interface is super easy to use and the features are excellent. I never tried the QNAP but can't imagine being any happier than I am with the Synology box. I have two 212+ and a 712+ and I use the Western Digital Red 3TB drives in them.

Hardware wise, their both pretty much the same systems. The main differences are in the UI and OS. Synology provides a more desktop like UI. Qnap is more traditional at this point with their GUI but I have a feeling they will be switching to a style similar to synology with their next release.
