I'm currently looking for a computer science internship to do over the summer. I tried applying to some major companies, but ofcoarse no reply and not expecting one the way it is right now. How did you guys land on a summer internship?

I did total of 4 internships/co-op during my college undergrad days. I started off as system Admin for school. Although pay wasn't as good as off campus jobs it was fun. It also gave me something to put on my resume. Nice thing abou working for school was that you have very little responsibililty. So you can easily take days off when you have exams or lots of HW. After six months of that I got another system Admin job for a big corp. That job got me $5/hr raise. Worked there for about 8 months by this time I was sick of system Admin jobs and had a decent resume. In my junior year I ended up doing embeded programming for this start-up which went under as soon as clinton left. But I was senior by then so I didn't accept any short term internships. I was only interviewing for jobs that had a fulltime potential. It took me about a month to find another job that was co-op while in school and fulltime after that.

But this was all when people were hiring and not firing :).

I would say if you have no real work experience you should try working for your school.

My friend who just graduated is having a hard time finding a job. He sent his resume to this company and the HR guy e-mailed him saying "We have much more qualified people applying for this job but we will keep your resume on file." How messed-up is that ?

I have 3 mandatory 6-month co-ops at my school. My first one was at Verizon, where I was in the "Requirements Analysis and Design" team and I basically did all their sh!twork. But most of the time I basically sat around all day doing absolutely nothing. I made a lot of money and it looks good on my resume, and doing that job realized that I absolutely do NOT want to go into software development. All they do is have meetings. It's constant BS and I would kill myself after a year of it.

the school is responsible for setting up ours. 2 month internship, no pay. Didn't do much really, more of job shadowing than anything else.
