Entirely unimpressed with Netflix on the 360

So I was thinking of getting a second Xbox 360, this one for the family room. I have one in my office and thought it would be cool to game with my son if he's using the second one. But part of the justification for this, as presented to the Entertainment Committee Chairperson (my wife), was that we could sign up for Netflix and be able to stream movies right into the family room.

She bit on it, hook, line, and sinker, but being the shrewd Chairperson that she is, she suggested we temporarily move mine downstairs so we can start using Netflix now. "Cool, then I'll get the brand new 360 in my office; win."

Well, we created a Netflix account and got their free trial, but there are only a handful of movies in each category, and each category is filled with utter shit that I saw... on VHS. Even their New Releases are movies that have been out for 1 - 2 years.

Is this because it's a free trial? Will I get access to REAL movie offerings once we start paying?

Go to the website and add things to your queue from there. As far as I know, the selection on the 360 is based on your preferences, which if this is your first netflix account, are non-existent.

But instant watch will never air new releases. I like it for series, but the movie selection isn't that great.

Pickings are slim but to be fair I looked into the whole Netflix watch instantly thing before it came to the 360 a few years ago and the selection was absolutely terrible, it has improved a lot and I expect it to improve more. The only thing that actually pisses me off is the lack of HD content. I just consider it a bonus to my Netflix subscription.

edit: and like viivo said, you can queue from your netflix account, anything that says "watch now" you can stream to your 360.

What does this have to do with the 360? Sounds like you are unimpressed with what's made available by Netflix. Anything that Netflix streaming has to offer is available on the 360 (and PS3). The 360 menu doesn't really show everything so it's better to just browse Netflix.com.

Most movies have been out for at least a few months and you're not going to find any brand spanking new blockbuster releases available for streaming if that's what you were expecting. There are movies from 2009, though, and the selection is always changing.

if you like documentaries there are a lot of those available. I also use it for tv series, like dexter.

The offerings that show up on the Xbox 360 are just a sample of what is available. You need to log on to the Netflix website, select the Watch Instantly tab and add movies to your queue. Your queue will then be available via the 360.

That said, there will be no new release movies on Netflix. The earliest movies make it to Netflix is the same time they are made available for the movie channels like HBO or Starz. TV Shows are better though.

Well excuse me. The thread title initially led me to believe that you were unhappy with the 360's implementation of Netflix which obviously is not the case.

Exactly. Whatever is available for 360 is the same that is available for everything else. Add movies from your computer as others said.

To each his own though. I have like 150 things in my instant watch queue.

+1 on the adding movies from your PC. Everything they offer me when I browse on my 360 is junk.

True most movies are not new releases, but netflix is getting better. When they first offered the instant watching thing, they had some OOOLLLLDDDD movies on there. Its getting better though, just give it time.

One thing I don't like is, it seems to always up my resolution once the movie starts playing, then 15 minutes later drops it back down. Hard to watch movies that aren't HD anymore.

Unfortunately, Netflix on the 360 doesn't currently allow you to manage your queue. All you have to do is go to the Netflix site and manage your queue there, and then the movies you select will be available for viewing on your 360. Otherwise, you will just see their "suggestions."

I've heard various reports that queue management will be added to the 360 at some point, but I am not sure when (or if) that will really happen. FWIW, I did buy one of the Xbox Pros when they were on closeout a couple of months ago for the sole purpose of having a Netflix box (and a backup Xbox for gaming) downstairs, and my wife loves it.

As others have stated, the selection for newer releases is kind of slim, but it is excellent for things like documentaries and series. But if you subscribe to Netflix anyway, it is a nice little bonus for you to be able to instantly watch shows if they are available via streaming.

Congratulations: you can read.

Apparently you struggle with your "words" OP. Your thread title should be "Unimpressed with Netflix options for streaming movies".

Go back to school. This thread has nothing to do with the 360, and you are spreading FUD. Interestingly enough, you get a fail for even putting this in the console section.

Plus Dexter, Lost (season 5), Heroes, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, ...

I just wish they offered subtitles instead of only dubbed for most foreign titles.

That's not at all what I said; it's just that some of you are so quick to jump to the 360's defense that you don't let the context sink in: my only exposure to Netflix is on the 360, and I wasn't sure if that had an impact on what I had access to or if there were certain arrangement worked out between Netflix and Microsoft. In case that were so, and given my lack of exposure to Netflix outside of the 360, I thought it might be relevant.

Sorry for providing too much information.

Agree with this and R Nilla's assessment. The thread title and OP make it sound like he is unimpressed with the 360's implementation of NetFlix streaming. Instead, it's really about the OP not having the basic understanding of how to use NetFlix streaming properly.

The OP's subsequent immature and condescending posts aren't helping his case any. We're "360 fanbois" because you don't know how to properly construct a post?

Just responding in-kind. If you guys want to play Thread Title Police, that's fine... but you may be called-out for your false calling-out from time to time. I didn't know if the console info was relevant to what I was/wasn't seeing with Netflix. Apparently it wasn't relevant. Excuse the hell out of me for mentioning it.

Goddamn some of you need LIVES.

LOL, you are a joke. You don't have basic comprehensive skills and expect the 360 to do MORE than Netflix actually offers. Then you blast those who do understand how Netflix works.

This thread (and OP) = Fail.

I agree that his title is misleading, but if you read his post you would see that he really didn't say anything bad about the 360. A couple of responders just replied based on his title without reading everything it seems.

Anyways, since the streaming to the 360 was introduced, the selection of movies has increased dramatically, including much newer movies. I have no doubt that it will get better and better as more people start using it.
Like has been said before, my biggest complaint aside from selection is lack of HD quality movies.
