I used to think I was a bit of a computer enthusiast but lately I have discovered I was wrong! Sadly on checking a few dictionaries they seem to have got it wrong too. Seems Intel have got it wrong as reading stuff on their site they refer to the "E" series of processors, E refers to extreme yet several reviewers refer to Intel's Enthusiast Extreme series. EE series?
I am fed up with the hijacking of the word enthusiast . I am fed up of being told this or that product is good , but not of course enthusiast level. It seems if I want say, a GTX750 I am not an enthusiast, ditto any motherboard under $120!
My mate John.
John is 54 and a taxi driver he is eccentric obsessive and a hoarder. He buys £35 old laptops , makes them work from salvage, aims for 2Gb min memory- a wireless card and installs chrome O/s . All keys /trackpads in good order and boy can he clean cases. but it's all low tech. I have rarely seen him with the same laptop twice. A lot of people use his laptops. I know by the hundred weight (approx 51kilo) he has more computer gear than most although probably stripped. He even keeps the paper it was posted in. Is he an "enthusiast" ?
Poor people.
A while back I was stunned how many Nvidia 8800gt video cards were sold in China in the first 3 months. Even on Chinese sites it was $100 U.S. , shows there is lots of money in China. But I firmly believe in China, Africa, India, UK and USA and more there are also people putting together a pentium4 with a 50gb hard drive and a 14" crt and thinking for now its the bees knees. Further I remember "XP" style screen savers being reported downloaded in some regions. if you can't afford a counterfeit full copy in those regions ( gosh you are poor) you will have to wait till a mate gets one. Not that such things exist in the above regions. There are people with severe disposable income problems every where but does that bar them as enthusiasts?
What can I do.
First. Beg reviewers to go back to the old fashioned phrase "High-end". That's what it is.
Second. Change my user name to Founder Member (for the gravitas)
Third. Fib about my kit.
