Enshittification

The first part of the video is worth watching. It's pretty funny. The Norwegian video popped up on mastodon a couple days ago.Might as well watch the rest after that. There isn't much other stuff,, but it's links to a wiki of anticonsumer products.

Enshittification is such a huge issue, as a start we really do need better rights to be able to modify or help others modify products without getting into legal trouble. If a company releases a product that has enshittification built in and someone can bypass it then they should 100% be allowed to publish that fix online without any legal trouble or lawsuit etc.

I find it all started with the smartphone actually. The minute they started to require phone apps to use a product that was the start of it, because now you're locked into a proprietary black box that is one update away from being unusable. Then of course lot of this stuff requires cloud or subscriptions too which makes it worse. I've pretty much opted to not touch any consumer home automation products for this reason, I don't want to be tied to requiring proprietary apps or cloud to use it. If it was software I can install in a VM it's not so bad, at least I can back that up but phone apps are just some black box that you can't do much with in terms of backing up or long term preservation.

Then of course there is web enshittification. So many sites now are horribly designed with shitty UX all around and it just seems to be a normal trend. Like annoying interactive stuff that pops up at you etc.
