I have been playing CS since APril 2000. I did take about 6months off due to community/server being down and busy with a new job. But I am predicting that my CS playing will be coming back now. Now I do agree with most, the graphics really do not look that great, I mean its better than what we have now but its still VERY plain and vanilla looking. Even with the plain graphics, its still better than CS is now and with the physics available, I am sure it will be better and better. Its a step in the right direction, which I am stoked for, but so far its not what I am waiting for in a new CS game. For 1 they need to improve the weapons realism. Well if they don't thank goodness there are guys like csrealism.com that saw the need, they are even working on a new models pack for it now. For the gamers that play in leagues, just only use the weapons models "w" and "y" files, not the"p" models. That way the gun is still stock when you see it in anothers hands, and no way there is cheating. Then you benefit from hi rez models when you hold the gun or see it on the ground. Bottom line, can't wait for this next revision of the game, but will be waiting for the future upgrades.

This isn't a "new version" really, there are few changes in terms of weapons and direct gameplay (physics changes gameplay). CS2 is probably what you're waiting for. That is a stand-alone retail game using the source engine, but it will most likely be radically different from CS in terms of how it plays, and how amazing it should look, given the power of Source. I agree with you that it's too unrealistic at the moment, and that's why I play DoD with occasional bits of CS and CZ. I actually bought condition zero on ebay just for this release of source, wanted to fool around with the engine before it because available officially. Hope you have a coupon for Hl2 or a copy of CZ so you can enjoy this beta goodness!

For those of you that played at the LAN centers... any thoughts on how well it runs? I know I'm gonna love the new graphics, but I will definitely miss 100fps. :(

Of course, this is only from looking at those screenshots from one level of the game, so I could be wrong. :p

Maybe it's the desert environment, I'm not impressed with the graphics either after what I have seen in Farcry or Doom III. Hopefully HL2 will be better.

Yeah, definitely part of it is that I have memories of seeing the HL2 trailers and being "wowed", but then again....that was well over a year ago now, and there are equally impressive (or more so) graphics out now, most notably in the form of Doom III and FarCry, as you said.

Edit: But of course we won't know for sure unless Valve ever finishes the damn game. :p

What do you mean coupon for HL2 or CZ? I have two cd keys for Half Life2, is that all it takes to get the beta?

I could be wrong, but I believe that the only HL2 keys that work are the ones from ATI graphics card bundles. I have no idea where else you would get a HL2 key, though. Also any CZ key gets you the beta.

I think that the reason some people are disappointed at the initial impression of this game is that they are expecting a new game. It is not. It's the same old game, just with a few improvements in the graphics and physics department. It's not being sold as a new game, or even a stand-alone game at all. It will come with Half Life 2 when that is released. It's basically a mod for HL2, just like the original CS. So if you're looking for a new gaming experience, you'll definately be disappointed. If all you're looking for is nicer graphics and the same gameplay formula, then you'll probably be pleased.

yeah. I am preloading the beta right now:

SOURCE ENGINE BETA TEST

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we get closer to releasing Half-Life® 2, we need to deploy the Source engine to a wide group to find any remaining configuration issues. We will accomplish this by conducting a limited-time beta test of Counter-Strike?: Source? via Steam to a select group of our customers. During this beta, problems can be reported using the in-game bug-reporting tool. In addition any crashes will automatically generate a report back to our bug database. Valve thanks you for your on-going support, and we hope that Half-Life 2 lives up to your expectations.

> CLICK HERE TO PRE-LOAD THE BETA NOW

(Note that the beta won't be playable until approximately August 18, 2004.)

CounterStrike: Source Beta is open to registered owners of
Counter-Strike?: Condition Zero? and ATI Fulfillment Coupon holders. The Beta software will be available for a limited time only for testing purposes.

You should have seen the frenzy this pre-load caused on the steam forums. People were screaming and shouting and complaining because the pre-load didn't begin exactly at the planned time. Started a few hours late, I think, or the time was just printed wrong. Anyway they had to shut down the forum for a while to avoid a giant stream of "PRE-LOAD STARTED!!!!!!!!!!!@$!%#%$!#@%!#%!@#%!@#%" Threads. A bit sad that they are getting so worked up over a preload. I've always said that CS fanatics are the most hopeless, most common, and get excited the easiest.
