Enlisting in the army

I'm considering enlisting in the army, or some branch, of which I'm not sure. I'm only trying to figure things out incase, in a few years I haven't figured out what I want to do with my life.

My question : Are they as strict about your past as, say, the police? I mean, I've tried marijuana, and I know that exempts you from being a police officer, but does that also apply to the "armed forces"?

This post makes no sense.
I imagine a few things will have changed in a few years.

Were you arrested for it or did you just try/use it in the past?

Also, all of the branches have sites that list things that make you exempt (legal issues, medical issues etc).

Enlisting in the army makes no sense. Do you have a death wish? Do you believe that the US under Dumbya needs to democratize the Middle East? If you do get ready to have fun in Iraq or Iran. Hope you don't come home in a box.

This is not the thread to proselytize. He asked a question about marijuana, not what you thought of the morailty of the current middle east conflict.

I told my recruiter I did marijuana. I just had to sign a waiver saying it was only a couple of times, and it was experimental. Of course this was the Marines where the quota crunch is greater than the Army.

You could also just not tell them, how would they know?

I'm Canadian, not American. I've never been arrested and I never used it on a regular basis. Only reason I'm looking into this is because I have no idea what I'm going to do with my life. I have no skills, I'm not better at anything than anyone else so I figure I can learn/see things while in the army.

You can become a cop if you've done marijuana
hell, you can become president

EDIT: You've never been arrested or caught with marijuana? Well then how the heck are they gonna find out?? Just don't smoke 30 days before you plan on getting tested

Well EXCUSE ME. He asked a question about joining the army or another branch of service. Under the current administration that is a guarantee of being put in harm's way sooner that later. One saved soul is worth a world of gold.

I wouldn't be against joining the US Army, either. At least I'd know that if I died, it would be for a reason, as insignificant it may seem to some. I want to do something with my life; something I can be proud of. I don't want to die as some guy who dide nothing.

Praise JESUS! You've saved a soul. Be sure he drinks the holy water of agreeing with you too.

We have enough zealots as it is around here. You may disagree with the current administration (hell, I do) but you don't need to go around browbeating others.

Go Navy!

they will ask you what you have done
most people can get a waiver for that type of thing, depending on what field you want to go into. you may be barred from fields that require security clearances

you should piss off conehead433, the people that enter the military know that the military goes to war as needed

p.s. if they do a background check for a security clearance, they can find out if you have done drugs and not disclosed it. LoKe is correct that he should not lie to the recruiter, just tell them and they can generally get a waiver

That's got to be the funniest thing I've ever seen here. ROTFLMAO

It would be an honour to drive our rusted tank. In all truth; I'd like to be a sniper. Though, that's not exactly something you can just "be". Too bad.

Now not to get rude or anything but didn't you say you had mental issues?

From my understanding, in the American army, that pretty much disqualifies you.

Oh and they hate snitches in the army, especially the Marines :)

Having been through background checks for employment, let me say that they know very few people are angels. Most everyone has something they are not proud of, and where I was from about half of the people my age had tried street drugs and or taken some one else's Rx. (One background investiagator told me off the record if you admit to absolutely no wrong they take an even harder look at you). What they are looking for is HONESTY and that you are not a domestic abuser, pedophile, drug dealer type. Most US police polygraph and I believe certain security clearances in the military do also. Now most places you cant be currently using any drugs, and previous use of "harder drugs" like cocaine heroin and LSD are more of a problem.
