Enlight 7237 PS

I have an Enlight 7237 w/300W PS, which I bought last October, and I believe it just quit. I tried to start my computer today after swapping a couple cards, and the computer started to boot (nothing showing on monitor) and then would stop, shut off, and start again (also noticed odd pinging sound in power supply). I eventually removed my motherboard and tried it out of case with my brother's power supply, and had the same problem. I believe, after reading a post a few threads ago, that my power supply went bad and took my board with it. Thought I'd post this as a word of warning for anyone with that same case. Now I guess I'll have to scrap up some money for a new case (or maybe just new power supply), motherboard, and probably a new processor (might as well upgrade since I need a new board). Hmmm, think there's any way that Enlight would pay for it? :(

Hmm... From using hundreds upon thousands of Enlight power supplies over the last 5 years, I have never seen one take out a motherboard, even after one, even two, years of use.

Now after hearing of your plight, I will never use another Enlight power supply.

Actually, no.

Not to necessarily make fun of your tragedy; but for you to damn Enlight for your one power supply sounds too much like me trying to convince everyone on this BBS to not use Abit.

Sometimes parts go bad. Sometimes the circumstances of which are disasterous. It simply "happens". :( :( :(

Actually, Enlight DID have a batch of bad power supplies a while back, but they were the 250W kind. Russ would know more about this... he was the one that discovered the problem in the first place...

I've used plenty of Enlight cases, and I own an 8950. I've never had a problem with any of them...

I thought those were the incidents you were speaking of...

<< UPDATE: Since this incident with this particular model, the problem with the Enlight power supplies has been corrected. You need only be
concerned if you happen accross this particular model.
>>

This was actually a problem with BOTH the VRs on the board and the P/S. The problem was exclusive to the EPoX MVP3E and the MSI 5169 boards. The problem lasted all of one week before both manufacturers of board and power supply realized the problem and addressed it.

This was back in early 1998.

<< UPDATE 1/21/00: If you are using the ASUS K7M Athlon motherboard, the HPC-250-101, Rev C of the Enlight 250W power supply will not work
correctly. No damage will occur, it will just shut down.
>>

I actually turned Russ on to this problem, and it's not an Enlight problem. Sparkles had the problem as well as many other power supplies. The Asus K7M has a funk ass circuitry on their board that does not use the 3.3V lead from the power supply, but rather obtains 3.3V from a VR that gets it's juice from the 5V. The power supplies had just enough noise on the 5V signal to cause the power supply to crowbar.

<edit> Re-reading my posts, it does sound like >>I<< am being a total ass, but I get a little defensive when people come in here and damn a company for one bad unit, yet continue to embrace companies that continue to put out poor quality product with high RMA rates. There is no "perfect product". </edit>

How can I check to see that my P/S is definately not working without hooking it up to another mobo?

I have the same Enlight Case with the 250w PS, but I changed it out for an Antec 300w because I am running dual CPU's. Never had any problems before I switched and now a buddy has the 250 in another case.

Probably a rare instance

If you want to test an ATX power supply to see if it merely powers up, you short the one green wire lead on the mobo connector to any one of the black leads on the same power connector.

This is the turn on signal for the power supply.

I'd say you can test the other mobo leads with a multimeter, but if you didn't know where to look for the turn on lead, you won't know what to look for on the other leads.

Link to the Enlight corp message boards. You can check and see if any others are having the same problem and once in awhile the Enlight reps will answer questions.
Enlight Corp message board.

I had one Enlight 250w power supply go out,but there was a large voltage drop at the time. I hadn't gotten around to putting it on a surge supressor or UPS. I replaced it with an old Enlight 250W I had laying around and it's been running fine for around a year.
Some time I'm going to see if it was just a blown fuse in the one that quit working.

I work as an RMA tech, so these things kind of stand out to me:

masterskartrg: The power supply is bad. You RMA the power supply. You don't have to RMA the whole case. If you drilled holes in the case, that makes no difference to the power supply! :p Unless you drilled holes in the power supply, which if you did, I may not want to know why! :Q

Maybe this is out of question,

Does enlight 7237 comes with 300w PS?

Is your PS a genuine enlight PS or a generic one?

I also own 7237 w/300w ps but it isn't made by Enlight though.

A lot of Enlight 7237s come with 300W power supplies, but these power supplies tend to be N'Spire and not Enlight, which is actually quite normal.

Many Enlights are sold by ASI under the "N'Spire" name. They "upgrade" the power supply to an "N'Spire" 300W power supply which is actually a rebadged Sparkle. And frankly, I'd take a Sparkle over an Enlight.

N'Spire branded parts are always top notch. Mitsumi drives, Asus boards, Sparkle power supplies, Enlight chassis, etc.

If the power supply was NOT a Sparkle or N'Spire, I can't help you cause I don't know where the heck it came from! :D

i've been saying some Enlight's with 300W Enermax(single Fan) power supplies lately. I'm guessing the majority do not, however.

Yeah. But they don't ship from Enlight like that. I called Enlight once way back when when I worked for one of their suppliers and they told me that their cases either ship with Enlight power supplies or no power supplies at all.

Therefore, if there is something other than an Enlight in there, it wasn't put in there by Enlight.
