according to wikipedia, the top picture never happened.

It did.

The marines, however, were not under fire when the picture was taken. It is still a fantastic photograph and a great testament to the men who fought in WWII.

The book "Flyboys" is written by the son of one of those men, and he talks about the photo in the introduction to his book.

Biggest use of humans for cannon fodder in history.

Weather, distance, poor planning and attrition were Hitlers main foes on the eastern front.
