what is this rugby you speak of?

Let me put is this way:

Rugby = Man's game

American Football = Weak

;)

If you're a skinny dude who wears pads while playing 2 hand touch with your friends, that's weak.

If you're a 275 lb defensive end that runs a 4.3 40 yard dash and knocks people out and breaks bones even while the dude is wearing a helmet and pads, that's not weak.

In reality all the oval ball games - rugby, grid iron, aussie rules, etc - are just as tough as eachother.

I'm a fan of any physical sport. Rugby is fine with me.

*For people outside the US who aren't aware of it, the football that people play recreationally is a lot more like rugby than what you see on TV. When I used to play with my friends, nobody wore pads, there were no breaks between plays, there were no penalties, etc. You ran, passed, and pretty much tackled whoever had the ball.

We used to call it "kill the man"

If you don't need to wear protective padding and equipment to keep from dying then the sport isn't that tough. The stop and go nature of football allows for far more vicious impacts than the circle-jerk wrestling nature of Rugby.

They don't wear protective padding in boxing or other martial arts.

Check out youtube for some hard hits in rugby - this was on the first page. Also note the Haka (Maori wardance) at the beginning. Care to tell those guys they ain't tough?

did those guys come straight out of the movie "Dodgeball"? i mean wtf kind of pregame dance is *that*?

btw, i see your rugby and raise you 1 Sheldon Brown vs. Reggie Bush

PFFFFTTTTTTTT

Rugby players >>>>>>> American Football players.

Put those pansy American Football players on a rugby pitch without their armour and they will get annihilated.

Sure. They're bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled and tougher.

Exactly.

I meant American Football Players. How many English Rugby players are 6'4" weight 260lbs and run a 4.4 forty? None.

I know. I was being sarcastic. ;)

Eh? Lawrence Dallaglio is 6'4" 250lb. Yea, most of them aren't that big, but there's a lot more running involved in rugby so you can't really afford to carry as much weight as American football players.

Oh, I wasn't agreeing with him. I was just saying I recognised that he was referring to American football players and not Rugby players :)

Unfortunately, although I don?t mind watching rugby when it?s on, I don?t know a great deal about the game (apart from the rules). I still think Rugby is a far tougher sport than American football.

so wait, is rugby supposed to be some type of new martial arts? I may like it then :D

let's see, an amature fight (less professional level athleticism involved) of tough (more like reckless in my eyes, but oh well) but small dudes fighting each other vs heavyweight champs with boxing gloves pounding each other...

I guess it could be a fair match, but I will take the latter.
Then again, basketball > football + rugby so /thread

I think if you wanted to be scientific about it, you could easily find out which sport is tougher by calculating which how much time the players of each sport spend on injured reserve.

Another mistake I often see the non-athletic people on ATOT making is assuming that there are "easy" sports. If you think it's "easy", you're not trying hard enough, and you'll always be out-competed by someone who tries harder than you. In the end, the upper limit of how hard you can try is physical exhaustion.

Well said. It is attempting to equate completely different sports to each other. But hey, a good natured pissing match/smack talk session about such things, can be good time. :)

Mwhaha.

Ohh, I see. I don't really follow rugby to be honest.

You only cared enough to start a thread about how they are owning USA.
Good going.
