I also need to include some text in there as well, and also support for subscripts, bold, and hats (the little rooftype shape on top of a letter).

Microsoft Powerpoint
Microsoft Visio

I use Visio because its better but is only part of the Professional Office Suite. Powerpoint is included in all Office suites. If you don't have office at all, you might want to check and see if openoffice has a powerpoint equivilant.

It was a wonderful freeware program before Microsoft took it over. I haven't looked in years, but an old free version may still be online.

Without looking at this thread I can only assume Visio was mentioned a dozen times.. make that +1.

I used PowerPoint for a while until I got Visio approved here at work. It does almost anything Visio does for flowcharts, and you should be able to get by with it. Otherwise get OpenOffice and check that Draw component out

Since Visio apparantly isn't an option and that's what EVERYONE uses, you're probably going to want to do a search on Download.com or something similar and try some out. I did the same when I was in school and needed to do charts without Visio. I was mostly able to find free trials, no free software unfortunately.
