i applied to comp eng at waterloo this year, and i was just wondering how they determine your overall average for admission.
is it the 5 prerequisites plus your highest 6th oac?
and in your experience, what's the lowest average you've seen get accepted to the program :)

thx in advance

I came in from BC so I'm not sure how they figured my average. But mine was around 88 or so (but from a pretty highly regarded school, taking some AP classes) and I barely got in. At first I got rejected, put me in chemical engineering (my 2nd choice) then a couple weeks later they called me and said a spot opened up for comp eng. This was 2 years ago.

i have a lotta friends that went into engineering there. computer engineering is tough, low nineties are the lowest ive seen but you also have to take into account your descartes adn that essay thing.

Descartes doesn't count anymore. They use the 5 pre-requisites and the sixth highest OAC as well as the AIF when considering admission. I got in with a 95 average from one of the higher ranked schools in Ontario and got a Nortel Scholarship, but some people in my class had high 80's. If you have good extra-curriculars then high 80's should be fine. Things are getting tighter because of the double cohort though, so next year (Sept 2002) and the two years after will probably require 90's to get in.

Yeah, I did so incredibly bad on the descartes, but that only counted for the math department when I applied... so I got rejected for compsci but made it into engineering.

Also, I did no work and got burned, don't make the same mistake I did :)

hmm
i'm not sure of my school's ranking (anyway to find out?) but my avg looks like it will be 92.2% and i do have a good number of extra curriculars and my aif was done pretty well.

opinions?

I applied to Computer Engineering at Waterloo this year too...I dont know if I"ll get in though...my OAC average is a 89..but i do have a lot of extra curricular activies so hopefuly that should help me.

Most of my OAC marks are pretty high..the reason my average is low is cause of stupid OAC Chemistry..I messed up in that course and its bringing my whole average down...hopefully the Admissions ppl will notice my other marks are consistently higher (95 in Calculus, 94 in Algebra) and only one mark is low and they will take that into effect.

I also applied to UofT for comp eng..if I get in both places I'm debating which Uni I should choose???

Waterloo
CONS
- more expensive
- cmop eng program not as highly regarded as UofT
PRO
- away from home
- multiple coop terms

UofT
CoNS
- 40min subway ride
- i live at home
- only one coop term
PRO
- cheaper
- more highly regarded as a eng program

You should get in as long as your average isn't inflated due to your english mark (they don't really care about english marks ;))

mAdD INDIAN: You will be close... if you have a good AIF then I think you have a good chance. The only problem is that a lot of people are going to fast-track this year to avoid the double-cohort next year.

Good luck to you both! :)

lol big difference :)

i always thought the opposite...where comp eng at waterloo is more highly regarded than that at UofT....especially since the averages required are higher and the the excellent coop program
any opinions?

tia ;)

Yes. they calculate the average based on the 5th requisites plus the highest remaining.
but as well they ask you to fill out the 'tell us about you' form. i would say do it.
i got accepted for comp sci/math but got rejected for comp eng.
of course my marks are nothing spectacular, had a 85 average, but ive got extra curicular activities that make them want to keep me around.

as for debating which program is better for engineering UT or UW, i'd just say go with UW. not only because i go there, but because the co-op is a heck of alot better, i mean we pioneered the system in Canada (granted its been working like crap lately). Generally your co-op terms make up for the increase in tuition. BUt try and get 8-stream, its REALLY hard to get a job on 4-stream. (from experience)

Oh yeah theres another downside to UW, the 15% tuition hike that makes engineering $4000 a term.. and CS about $3500 i believe..

And as for the lowest ive seen.. mmm.. generally the published scores are the averages.. so id say about 88..
my friend got accepted with a 88 i think, except he went into CS like me (because only pansies go into engineering. ;))
