Engine Squeaking

Hello everyone,

So today I had all my windows open and when I parked I heard a faint squeaking sound coming from my car. So before I turned my engine off I took a video of it, I have no idea if its been doing this for a while or just now. I also want to note its been raining here alot, and at 4pm today on the highway I hit some puddles at 30ish after breaking(poor visibility), so I don't know if it got wet or anything.

It has currently 33,242 Miles on it. I got it at around 32,500 Miles on the 10th of may. It is fully stock.I had half a tank when I left the dealer and now just filled up on third.

I have bumper to bumper warranty since I got it certified, they said they checked all the belts and stuff. But who knows if they really did check it.


I have to go back to the dealer to get some weather stripping for my car, so while I am there they can fix this issue. But better knowledge of the issue I am having will assist in fixing it. I do think its the belts, but I don't know much about Engines right now.

Is it safe to drive the car now without causing harm?

probably just a belt or something. i would not worry about it, btw.. you tube blocked at work.

it's probably the serpentine belt tensioner or idler (if applicable). could also be coming from an accessory like your alternator or power steering pump.

it doesn't seem terribly loud, it should be fine for a while. i'd definately get it looked at, though, especially if it's in warranty.

Yea, I am going in tomorrow to get the weather striping for my door so Ill show them the video, and hopefully its still making the sound so they can hear it.

Mine has been doing that for about 5 months, first time I took it in they "lubed" the belts and it was quiet for all of 3 days. Once I go in for the 30k mile maintinance I'll see if I can get them to replace it. So far I haven't noticed it affecting anything, its just a lil annoying to hear it.

hmm weird. I think squeaking is unacceptable. I don't know about you it would drive me nuts. it already is.

if it's in warranty squeaking should be a valid complaint as long as it's from the engine (general squeaks and rattles of the car are usually only covered for a short 'adjustment' period).

I've learned to live with it as my nearest dealer is an hour away(Atl) if there is no traffic. Also mine doesn't seem to be as loud as yours but it does originate form the area you were pointing at.

Yea, the dealer is a easy all highway 30 min drive which I do almost everyday, and I have to do it tomorrow for a replacement weather striping for the rear right door so ill state my complaint and show them the video. I also will take a video before I leave anywhere to see if its still squeaking.

A "beater" (or your car) squeaks because the belt is old and hard, a pulley is not spinning freely, or because the tensioner is not applying the proper tension on the belt. Your car is a 2005, possibly purchased in 2004 which makes it 5 years old. Just replace your belt with a quality replacement such as a Dayco. I doubt that your warranty will cover a belt, just as it won't cover brake pads, windshield wipers or other "wear" items.

his belt isn't slipping, that's a bearing noise. belts don't slip rythmically.

So today, I turn it on and no squeaking is apparent ill keep monitoring this though.

It will only grow worse.

The squeaking you hear is one of two things:

1. The bearings in an idler or some other pulley on your serpentine belt going bad.
2. The belt rubbing against the side of one of the pulleys as a result of a SLIGHT misalignment somewhere.

If you take it in to the dealer, they will tell you it's the belt, replace it, and you'll be good for 6 months until it starts squeaking. Unless you want to pay them a buttload of money, they are not going to go through and check alignment on all your pulleys - in addition those pulleys are mostly all aligned by how they and the attachment point is machined - there is no adjustment.

You're going to be better off living with it, or just replacing your belt every 5-6 months.

my car has the same problem (07 mazda 3). It does not do it at idle though, it only happens when I drive around 20-30 mph and I not really throttling.
