Engine Choices

I know someone with a blown 1ZZ-FE from a 2003 Corolla. Will a 1998-1999 Corolla 1ZZ-FE drop in, bolt up and run correctly or are there modifications involved? The differences I noted was that 1998-1999 1ZZs don't have VVT-i and thus the ecu might not accept it.

I would guess no, it will not work.

VVT-i motors have additional sensors and wiring for the VVT-i system. At best it would run with a check engine light on (failing emissions in most states) in "limp mode". At worst it may not run at all.

^^ What he said. The only way to make it work is to take the wiring harness and ECU, along with the accessories (relays/etc), and then you'll have no significant problems.

^agreed, the motor should bolt up to the mounts without a problem but thats about it, sensors connectors changed and pinouts as well hence why the harness and ECU needs to come with. might run into problems with immboilzer pending on how toyota did it. best thing is to go get same model year aleast and even then they make have small production changes from the 03 and 03.5 but i never heard of toyota doing it, mainly VW's and nissan with the last 1 or 2 models of the gen.
