Believe me, the word "invest" is about the only way I can stomach spending more than a couple hundred dollars on any piece of jewelry.

For all the serious posters: thanks for all the opinions so far, trying to collect as many as possible so I can make my decision based on education as well as other people's experiences.

I bought white gold and put my money in the stones. My wife was much happier. To women, it's really all about the rock. Platinum is just the latest upsell by jewelers. Don't fall for it. Put your money in the rock. I cannot stress that enough. And FFS don't spend too much. Even one month's salary is too much. If you need to go 2 months' salary, then spend the other one on a dream honeymoon or something to get you started together in life.

Oh, you sentimental old fool... marry me!

Seriousry though... yeah, people have crow brains. Actually, I've never heard of crows killing for a shiny rock like people do. Sure, one may counter that the shiny rock represents food, shelter, territory and access to mates but still, only because other crow brains put that false value in it. Worse, the value should be exponentially lower since the inception of enourmous industrial mining operations but alas new crow brains are apparently being churned out fast enough to justify continued monopolistic pricing.

You better not find out how much money you would get if you tried to sell it. It makes Homer Simpson's pumpkin investment look like tech stocks in the late 90's.

I certainly have no plans to sell it.. ever...sadly I know a couple of people who figured out how well the diamond would hold its value for exactly that reason.

Wife's engagement ring -- It's funny watching people handle this ring--they think the stone will fall out.
Can't find her wedding ring on there right now.

We ordered from the same place :)

White gold is usually 18k and is plated with rhodium. After a while it wears off and the ring goes yellowish. I bought my wife an 18k white gold engagement ring because it was cheaper than platinum and allowed me to spend more on the diamonds.

When we got our wedding rings, she had hers custom made to fit the engagement ring. We knew a jeweller and he made her wedding ring out of 19k white gold which does not have the rhodium plating and does not yellow. Even though she's only had the engagement ring for 10 months now, and the wedding ring for 2, the engagement ring is noticably yellow compared to the wedding ring.

For mine I looked at palladium and didn't really like it. I wanted something kind of silvery in colour (ie not yellow gold), and wanted it to be durable. I ended up going with tungsten carbide and I love it :)
Tungsten carbide? You better tell them to use a hammer if the ring ever needs to be removed. :D

Yeah I know. I heard unfounded horror stories of hospitals not being able to get them off if they need to, but while they can't CUT them off, they have a vise which will easily crush it.

This ring is awesome though. It's indestructible and impossible to scratch. I've rubbed it on all sorts of things during my daily routine and it still looks brand new.
