*preface, I know nothing about rings!*

My brother and cousin both got engaged recently to their respective girlfriends, and they spent about 15k each on a ring. I can't figure out how they spent that money.

I am looking at rings on diamonds.com and I see for ~8k I could get:

Size: 1.52 ct
Color: J
Clarity: SI1

on a cathedral platinum band for ~8,250 (7475 for the diamond, and 800 for the band)

Does it cost a lot to set the stone onto the band? Here are more details :

You're blowing 8 grand on a hunk of carbon, and asking how much it will be to set it?

I wish there was a way to do one smiley smacking another one.

I think it depends on:

a) size of diamond
b) clarity of the stone
etc.

My wife didn't want anything very large, so she has a 1/3 carat Trilliam diamond that cost me about $1200 on sale. I think it was appraised for about $1800 or so. At the time, though, I was only making about $9/hr so it was all good.

$15k for a ring? With today's divorce rates? I'd use that towards a car instead. ;)

I wouldn't buy it. That is a marginal clarity and color rating. Check out the pricing on a D-F color and VS1 and better clarity diamond. The prices skyrocket, that's why you buy used :p.

that's what my current g/f said when she found out how expensive rings were.

she said if we were to get engaged she doesn't want anything close to that expensive.

For that kind of money you should be able to get a better diamond. You're paying entirely for size, but it's not a great stone IMO.

I spent $1600 for a 14k white gold band w/ filigree and side diamonds, and a 0.3 ct, princess cut, F, vs1 stone. The combination of the band and stone are very pretty and elegant.

chart for reference.

Perfect!

OP: And I did read the thread. You didn't really say whether or not you were considering it. Consider my reply a preemptive one should you ever consider something like that. Oh, and feel free to forward the above link to your brother and cousin.

My wife actually helped pick out her ring. I think i got lucky inm that she truly is not one to wear a lot of jewelry, and she hates larger stones because they look gaudy and/or they snag on things.

I'd much prefer quality over quantity. 1 ct. is big enough, and nothing less than H, VVS1.

heheh yea, its amazing how low "used" diamonds are. check out CL for proof. I do not like diamonds i would much rather spend money on a high grade sapphire or ruby.

You realize the only thing better than VVS1 is IF (internally flawless and very rare) and FL (flawless and even rarer)? IMO, it would be a mistake to pick an H colored stone with a VVS1 clarity. Too large of a disparity.

Any women who would wear a 15000 dollar ring is asking for trouble. Can you imagine losing 15000 in cash? Wearing such an expensive thing would make her a target for robbery. Hope its insured!

Did your cousin get a custom made ring? That greatly ups the price.

new diamonds are a huge waste of money - like others have suggested, look around on the secondary market

funny how the jeweler who sells you that 5k diamond will only give you 2k to buy it back...

It's like anything. You pay for quality.

Bump up the color and clarity to F VS2 and you are looking at 10.4k PER Carat or about 16k just for a 1.5ct stone.

Also, the price per ct rises as the ct (weight) increase. Think about how that effects the price.

The cut is the most important aspect. I'd rather have a .95 ct F VS2 Ex cut. You'd also save a bundle.

I said it before and I'll say it again. With diamonds, bigger isn't better.

Go for a moderate, higher quality stone. You'll get a ring that doesn't get snagged on everything and one that looks good in any light. Larger diamonds have more flaws (based on their size) and they are much easier to see....plus, they show they're true color more. (which is a bad thing for a J color... It would be more yellow)
