get like her birthstone or something some girls love crap like that.

For an engagement ring? Ah no...we don't love crap like that! It does'nt have to be an expensive diamond, but it does have to at least have a great story behind it. Why don't you go to an antique store and find a really cool antique ring. That's a bit more classy, and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for it!🙂

an antique probably has more character, and is more interesting than a typical mall store ring (which is about what you get for $300).

Is it possible to get a design that you can add stones to later?

I was being sarcastic!

Just be like Homer, give her a donut.

For me, if everything goes according to plan, I'll buy a $15K diamond ring pretty soon...

Tell you what, move out of mom and dad's house and then you can talk about how easy it is to save money.

Well yeah, so was I. I saw the 😕, I know what that means.

is a little more obvious, and not quite as subtle. It just popped into my mind, and if figured "you know what, since I'm already typing, it wouldn't be a nef!"

Thanks for the perspective... 🙂

I just want to make her happy, and I saw the look on her face when she was trying on that $3K ring today. 😉

I'm depressed now... 🙁

She'll live. I bet she wants the dowpayment on the house a lot more. My husband is forbidden to buy me expensive jewelry: only electronics 😀

You could go titanium with a small diamond. You can get some very cool titanium rings for relativley little money. Mount a modest diamond in there and you're set.

so, is titanium suppose to be a step up (for lack of a better phrase) from platinum? Is it the latest craze? just curious...

You really don't get much "better" than platinum really. Titanium is dirt cheap - $7 a pound vs. $1000 a pound so you can make rings much cheaper. You can do some really nifty things with titanium. It has a very unique finish to it that you just don't see very often in gold/platinum.

It's by no means a "stature" sort of ring, but you can have custom rings made out of it for very cheap, and some times that uniqueness is more important than the actual price of the ring. Biggest downside of titanium is that it's such a hard metal that you can't resize the ring.

Sigh... Yea, she'll live... You're right that she would be happier with a downpayment on a house. She doesn't really want to live here in this apartment with me, but she'll do it for a year. She has talked about buying a house more than the ring. 🙂

Ok, if I really, really can't afford a nice diamond engagement ring and don't want to go into debt over it, what else can I get?

I'm planning something special for Christmas, gonna pop the question to Thumper between Christmas and New Years, but I just don't have the money for a decent ring. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Is there any other kind of ring I can get that will be special, yet cost no more than about $300? (I'm broke and out of work, what can I say?)

I want to make this special, but I know she would not be happy if I just borrowed the money or put it on a credit card, so I'm trying to work with cash here.

Options?

Sorry if someone said this I didn't read ALL the post. BUT.....

Get a man made diamond. They are BETTER than a real diamond as they are anywhere from 90-99% PERFECT, and they are a LOT cheaper. Also they don't use slave labor like mined diamonds do.

Or just give her a gold band. And tell her if you want to marry me for anything other then myself, then we need to break up. (Gold diggers need not apply)

I do not plan on buying, whom ever I marry, a REAL diamond. It will be either a man made one or no diamond at all. Maybe a birth stone, just find out what month is her birthday and see what her birth stone is. Might be good looking

First of all, it's a smart move on your part not to go in over your head budget-wise. My ex bought me a platinum 1-ct diamond engagement ring for $6,000... I didn't accept it, and he's still paying for it. 🙁

If I were you, I'd buy her a promise ring first.

Peace,
Dezign

My word, you were proposed to and you said no? Ouch, that's got to hurt... 🙁

You're not understanding. The point of me mentioning "living at home" ... is that... THAT is the best thing to do IF YOU CAN. To save money by living with parents IF YOU CAN. You have to plan everything to get anything. People who are in my shoes (working full time, out of college, but crashing at home a little longer - not far-fetched) can save TONS of money if they put effort into it. THose are the people I'm saying "$5000 is not a lot to spend." to. I have a friend who spends practically every dollar on his paycheck just to enjoy his life (understandable). He's my age. But when it comes time to drop a few grand on something as important as an engagement, he'll think his $37k salary can't afford him $5k for a diamond ring this one time in his life.

And about moving out of mommy's and daddy's... we closed on our new house about 3.5 hours ago. My fiance and I are now proud owners of our very first.
