That's the way the industry works. Don't think you can actually sell the ring back for that price. For the most part, those appraisals are to make the buyer feel better about their purchase. Blue Nile has pretty decent prices.

I'd recommend getting an actual replacement value appraisal for use with insurance. Insurance will charge you a set price per 1K to insure the ring. Using the appraisal you were given will end up costing you more in insurance premiums. Since you are likely never to sell it, it's amusing that a lower appraisal will actually save you money in the long run.

oh, i totally agree. But i am confused, what companies would insure this kind of jewelry and what would the approximate insurance and time period look like dollar wise? (roughly)

The insurance company will insure it for the appraised price. I dunno how much we pay to insure Lola's ring of similar value.

what is funny is that Lola already knows my proposal and all of this info. she gave me advice and said something about blue nile to me if i remember correctly.

i would be curious if you could get any insight...dont want to pry though.
LOL!!! i am so excited for you!!! :)
For my ring on our home policy, insuring it for $7859, it is $154 per year.
This is covered if ANYTHING should happen to it.

so, i just got my ring from blue nile today. It is absolutely georgous. Here is the question...

i paid less than $4,000 for the ring and i have a legal paper from a GIA graduate from Blue nile that appraised the ring for $7,100. Does this seem right? I am going to take it to another jewelry store and have it appraised, but that seems so odd to me that it is worth almost double what i paid for it.

also, for anyone curious, blue nile had great service and was very timely. The ring and diamond are both better than i expected. 9/10 in my book.
let us know what the other jewelry store appraises it for.

and congrats. :)

are you just gonna pop the ring out and propose or do you have something more interesting and adventurous planned?

there is a whole process, but i didnt really want to explain it on here :p

it has something to do with taking her back to where we had our first date, then getting a new dress and shoes and wearing them to the nicest restaurant in town (IMO and hers). i made her a clock with walnut and zebra wood and the lid lifts off and the diamond box can fit inside...that is the cliffs.
you bought her a new dress and shoes?!?!? x 100

it is like a scavanger hunt, the hints take her to our first date place, then white house black market and she picks out the dress of her choice and they already have my credit card info. then she goes to dsw for shoes and then the restaurant :p

thank you btw :)
That's so sweet! :)

those appraisals are based on retail values.

The blue nile ring would more than likely sell for at least that at a chain-jeweler/tiffany's type place.

The great thing about buying like this is usually you can get most of your money back selling to the average joe that doesn't know there are better venues for buying diamonds than the Yellow Pages.

that actually seems odd as most jewlery comes with a certificate appraising it for double for your appraisal should read $8000 though i suppose not every store guarantees the double appraisal. it isn't actually wirth that much, i heard it is mainly for insurance purposes

I haven't priced them in a while....my wife didn't want more than a band which we don't wear.

However; if you can deal with .75 carat; there are a lot better deals.

My wife is 5' tall. .75 carat looks like she has godzilla on her finger.

She made me promise no ring until house. My last .71 carat was ~$2000. in around march of 2000...EGL Princess, 4.95x4.75x3.60, 75.7% depth, 83% table, 6% crown, 44% pavillion, thick and polished girdle, good polish and symmetry, no culet.

VS1, F, not graining, Very Slight Blue fluorescence.

I sold that ring for about what I paid and the buyer was extremely impressed. I wish I didn't sell it. The thing was brilliant.

It's replacement value. They can't just magically say your stone is worth 2x what you pay on a true certified stone.

your home/renters/condo insurance can... you need to get a rider for the ring... another words you have to "schedule" it. Just tell your agent you want to schedule the ring on your policy. you will need to give them a copy of the appraisal. :)

diamonds are a big scam. there's cost (loooow, tainted with blood of an African child), perceived value (what you think other people think it's worth), and actual value (zero - I don't think how a diamond brings anyone utility, especially at the wedding ring size).

I also bought my fiancee's ring from Blue Nile in May 2004 and the appraisal (retail value) was around $2K more than what I paid for it. I spent a few weeks researching diamonds and it was quite an experience. In the end I went with the Signature Princess diamond for the center stone. It came with GIA and GCAL certs, and one of these days I'll have to purchase the matching wedding band. :p

You actually made the clock? Are you some kind of carpentry hobbyist? Sounds interesting. If you are a carpentry hobbyist I may actually have a question or two...

yes it does. :)
no matter what happens to it... falls out, ring is lost, goes down the garbage disposal, toilet, etc.

0.78 carats

the mount is a 4 prong with small diamonds on the band and a wierd profile...that is why i like it. You can look it up under the matching settings and traditional gold

Is it certified? If so, by whom?

Sorry, is this the blue nile ring? If so, I answered my own question. I think most of their rings are GIA certified.
