Enermax EG451P-VE 450w Power Supply with RPM readout

In case the above weren't clear:
This PS has two fans, one powered -externally- by a 3-wire power lead.

That allows it to be plugged into a motherboard fan-socket which senses rotation speed -- just as with other 3-wire fans.

Cute. Cuter would've been to power it INTERNALLY while offering the external lead so that it could be monitored: plugged into that m/b socket it would provide the pulses w/o drawing current.

Haven't found any reason not to luv mine!

YIPES! Above is WRONG about the external power! 😱 (Thanks guys, below.)

Only two days ago I pulled power wires on each fan to "find the noisy one". 'Thought I heard a slight drop in sound when I pulled the PS's external wire. Another example of shaping experience to match expectations, however: I just re-tested it and the fan's still spinning with the cable off. Doh!
 
I have the enermax 350 whisper version and when I pull the 3-pin fan connector I notice the fan on the back of the power supply stops spinning. My case runs cool so I think the power supply stops the back fan but why does it start if I plug it into the mobo?
