Enermax EG351P-VE 330W not enough for T-Bird 1Ghz?

I purchased one of these from Pham Comp. a few days ago and it is on its way to me right now. However, I just read a page at:
http://www.wavesonic.com/power_supplies.htm

This is one of the direct resellers of Enermax in the US and is referenced by Enermax on their HQ main page. The link above seems to indicate that they do not recommend their 351 series PS for anything above 850Mhz. The table shows that the only PS they recommend for 1Ghz is their 451 series. Does this have something to do with stability of the output voltages or not enough wattage or what? AMD lists the 285 series and the 451 series as approved at 1Ghz, but not the 351 series. That seems to rule out wattage since the 285 series is even less. Does that mean that there is something not up to spec on the 351 series or that they just haven't tested it yet? I'd appreciate any explanation anyone can give me. Did I buy the wrong PS?

Thanks,
Realon

Hi,
I have the enermax whisper 330, also bought at phamcomputers, Looking at my sig, you can see that I have a lot more crap on my computer than you, unlisted are the dvd decoder card, monitor cooler, 4 more fans, etc.etc... I have no problems with power, seeing that this is a 330 watt power supply and 300 watt power supplies would do the job, I think the enermax is more than enough, besides even the 285 series is approved, they probably haven't got around to approving the 330 yet, there are a lot of power supplies. Don't get to paranoid about these things. They probably recomment the higher wattage power supply for one reason, MONEY, the 400 watters are $100. I hope this helps.

Oh yeah on the page you linked, it says:
* All power supplies meet the +3.3V & +5V requirements of AMD K7 CPU: (All power supplies are over 18A at +3.3V.)
so I assume it refers to the 330 also.

Thanks, I think?? I ordered the same PS myself. Now I'm wondering...hmmmm. I read the specs & they're atleast as good as the PS I have now & it's running @ 1ghz. I guess the only way to find out is to install that bad boy & see.

Well, the Enermax 275 is AMD approved, i just don't think AMD has tested the 330W unit.

I do agree that the Enermax 351 series is most likely fine. I guess I'm just questioning it. The fact that AMD approves the 351 series for Durons @ 800Mhz tells me that they've at least had one in their hands. Maybe they just haven't tested that specific model with Athlon T-birds yet. Like you said, the fact that the 285 is approved and the fact that they all meet the voltage requirements makes me feel more comfortable. It's good to know that someone else who has a packed system has used this without any problems. One way or another, since the PS is already bought, I'm going to use it. I'd love to hear how it is that I would know if there were problems though. Instability I would be obvious from unexplained reboots, but what about low or inconsistent wattage? Anyway, thanks for all your help.

Usually when a power supply isn't strong enough, it won't boot up, until something is removed like a fan, lets say your board doesn't boot up. You remove a fan, and then it boots up, then it was the power supply.

It's probably not a power issue, if it's not approved it might be because of heat. Because of the lower speed fans they might not feel it can remove enough heat from a case. Most OEM computers don't come with more than the CPU and power supply fan, if you have extra cooling you should be fine.

I had just finished building my system with it, O/C duron @1G not a problem! I had 4 case fan running. Also a Taisol HSF, a HSF on KT7 Raid and another HSF on 3D Prophet II GTS.

Installed that bad boy last night & it works fine. In addition to the stuff I have in my sig I also have 2x120mm & 1x92mm Panaflo fans hooked up, not problems & it's DAMN QUIET - hurray!

The Enermax 351's work fine at any TBird speed even in the most loaded systems.

i ordered the same ps from the same place a while back, and it works great with my tbird at 750, untell i get my new board anyway:) i feel confidant that it can push plenty more too. the only problem i had was that the fan speed is not recongnised by my motherboard. so i called pham and the guy said that others had the same problem and sujested that my motherboard just doesnt read it because it spins to slow. he offered to send me a low speed fan to test the theory. however i had a spare laying around to try it and it worked just fine, so who knows what the problem is but otherwise its a great ps so i decided to keep it. enjoy yours:)

I think that the AMD PSU site is a little goofy and poorly updated. I doubt that AMD puts a great deal of effort into it at this point, their attention is elsewhere.

I mean that's OK, it's not too hard to read between the lines once you get a handle on it. Every time they increase processor speed, they have to retest a whole bunch of PSU's. This takes a lot of time & effort, and they obviously can't be 100% current given the very rapid release of higher speed grades.

I'm a little surprised that they don't jump ahead and test on their highest speed prototypes and publish the certifications as the processors are released.

Having said all that, I'm sure that the 331w Enermax will handle 1gig and faster T-Birds, that info just hasn't been published as of yet. The Enermax was listed for the 950 when the 950 was top of the line.

Besides that, they list a 150w sfx for the Athlon 1200, not even in the same league as the Enermax.
