Enermax Chakra Report

Well, I got my new rig put together. My daughter's actually. The system components is in my sig. Everything is installed and I'm letting it sit for a day or two for Burn in before I start the overclocking part. I did want to give a quick report about the Chakra case. Alot of people feel the 250mm fan on its side is overkill.

Fans- Everything installed fine. I did add two Enermax Enobal 120mm fans. One in lower front and one for rear exhaust. Very quiet fans. They run about 1850rpms according to the BIOS. The 250mm side fan is also very quiet. Runs about 900 rpm. True to its word the 250mm fan blows in or out and can also be turned off. The front fan is a little harder to install than the rear but not a major problem. Remove four screws to remove the hard drive cage. Pull off the front cover and screw in the srews provided. Had to pull out the hard drive cage anyway to install the hard drive so no biggie. The rear fan easily installed since nothing to block its installation.

PSU: I installed a Seasonic S12 600w psu and it fits in just fine. You could put in a larger one if you wanted. No install problems here.

Bay covers: The two top bay covers flip down if you want to hide a couple of drives. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your needs. If its a drive you use alot you'll constantly hold down the flip plate cover while accessing it. These flip covers can be removed but make sure you remember how it goes back together. A couple of tiny springs can be easily lost.

Case Design: the case is designed to look nice and it does. The side fan is large but its not an eye sore or anything. People will surely notice it but as my friend and I said as we gazed upon it we thought it was pretty awesome looking. The black color does lend to greasy finger marks though but all black cases tend to do that. The only major drawback I found was there was no front IEEE conector in the front or up top. Its a niggling complaint but some may not like there not being one. There is two USB ports, a external hdd connector port, on/off switch, and a reset switch up top and a cover that closes over them to keep dust out.

The case is a mid-tower case but it'll house a P5W DH Deluxe mobo, 600w psu Conroe proc, and a Zalman CNPS 9500 AT hsf very nicely. without a problem. The side fan clears the 9500 hsf by about a 1 1/2 inches or so. More than enough room for those that want a bigger hsf than the Conroe retail setup.

With everything installed and running idle this is one very quiet case let me tell you. You have to stick your ear up to the side of the case to hear anything running inside at idle speeds. I havent done any temperature checks yet nor have I overclocked it yet but that will come later. I dont think there is going to be a noise problem after I do. Right now i'm just gonna let it sit and burn in for a day or two before I start the stress testing and overclocking.

Price: This case is listed at $69.95 and most places are selling it for that but I ordered mine online from Central Computers. They list it for $55 plus shipping. That seems to be their normal everyday price too and not a sale price. For $55 this is a very good deal I feel.

Its a case certainly worth a look at for those wanting a nice reasonably priced midtower case that wont break the bank and does a excellent job of cooling with little to no noise.

Nice report.

I hear the Enermax "Enlobal" fans tend to be short-lived. Let us know how yours stand up. I would have only used the front fan as that side monster could use that back fan hole as a pressure relief - the front fan is useful to force some air across the HDDs. Don't really need the rear fan. Do the experiment - it'll be fun: run it a while with the rear fan in to get a feel for the temps. Then take it out and run it for a while to see how the temps react. It's possible that the temps won't change or may be even lower. Let us know.

Yep! That's Enermax for you!!!

They're the best 'reasonably priced' cases out there, IMHO...

Nice article! 😉

Zepper,
According to the specs they are good for 40,000 hours I think. Which is something like 4.5 years if I run it 24/7. Now that I know how they fit in the case its not hard to replace them if I need to sooner. They go online for around $10 each. I bought mine from Performance-PC for $12. PPC sleeves the wires for that extra $2. Thats why I got it from them. Just to make it look nicer on the wire management.

VinDSL,
Thanks for the kind word. The case is sweet for what it is. I cant believe how quiet the fans on it are. I'm very impressed so far. I never thought much of Enermax cases. This is my first. I feel I made a good choice for this build. I know some people are gonna chuckle about the size of the side fan but damn it if it doesnt work as stated! Once I start overclocking it and get some actual temps and numbers then I'll know how good it really is.

Kromis,
Its cheaper than the car she wants. ;-)

Thanks for the detailed review. I've been looking at this case for a future build (a build that would be pretty close to yours, but cheaper motherboard, memory and Seasonic PSU). Anything else to report now that you've had more time with the case? I don't think the 250mm fan looks silly at all as long as it is quiet and keeps the case cool (something that doesn't actually accomplish anything on a case is what looks silly to me).

Yesterday I finally got around to testing this 250mm case fan a bit more. A new a/c unit in the room keeps the ambient temps a constant 75F now. Okay, with the 250mm fan on (along with the 2 120mm fans) and blowing air in I keep my rig in sig 43C idle. If I turn the 250mm fan off temps rise 2C. If I set the fan to blow/pull air out of case the idle temps rise 5C to 48C. I didnt test it under load. Figured the temp differences would be pretty much the same. Just thought I would add this little tidbit of an update in case anyone was interested. 🙂

very well thought out!! Nice!!

Only thing is that Central Computers now lists them for $65 so I guess they raised their prices. Still not a bad price considering. Most places are listing them for $70. The buyer will want to get two 120mm fans for the case IMO for optimal cooling.

Interesting!

Thanks for the update! 😉

Okay, new update. I just measured the innards of my daughter's Chakra case. According to my measurements the 8800GTX should fit in it. I measured 11inches of space lengthwise and the GTX is 10.5inches. So that leaves a half-inch or so before it hits the inner cage that houses the hidden drives. I dont have any drives in that area in my setup. I dont have a actual GTX to confirm this unfortunately. Sorry about that. But figured I'd update folks on what I found. Maybe someone with a Chakra and a 8800GTX can confirm or deny my findings?

Another update. Finberg contacted me and says he tried putting Scythe Infinity hsf into his chakra case and its too big by about an inch. Thought folks may want to know this when considering this case.

I recently purchased this case also.
I noticed the same as you regarding the 25cm side fan. I have it feeding air to a ThermalTake Big Typhoon that fits with no problems.
Big Typhoon
I am also getting two 120mm fans for the front and back to pull air out of the case.

Great case.

If you ever try to install a 8800GTX card let us know how it goes. I'm curious if one will actually fit. I think it will but hasnt been proven yet.

Okay, another update. Today I wanted more proof wether a 8800GTX will fit a Chakra case or not. Prior mesurements suggested it will. Since the 8800GTX is too costly to buy just to test fit I did the next best thing I could think of. I took some thick & stiff cardboard and cut a piece to the GTX's dimensions. Here is what I discovered using the rig in my sig below and my cardboard GTX mockup.

A single 8800GTX will fit into the Chakra case. It shouldnt be a problem as long as you use the upper PCIe SLI slot, which you should be anyway for a single card setup. Now the question remains can a person run two 8800GTX in SLI? This could be mobo dependent but again using my mobo in sig below it is possible. However there requires some changes.

A second 8800GTX will butt up against the lower drive cage where the hard drive/s are set so it wont fit properly(you might be able to force it but I wouldnt advise it). However there are two work arounds to this problem. The first, and hardest way, would be to cut 1/4-1/2 inches off the back of the hd cage. The second, and by far easiest is to simply remove the lower cage altogether. This hd cage is designed to be removed anyway (so you can install the hd inside it) so no mods will be needed. However you would need to find a new spot for the HD. You could place it in one of the two upper cage bays.

Placing the hard drive in another bay has pros and cons. If you have multiple hard drives (2 or more)this may not work. Another con is that the front 120mm fan is located in front of the hd rack so it will no longer be able to pull air over the hd if it is somewhere else. There is a plus here though. Removing the lower hd rack would allow the 120mm fan to pull fresh air in and directly at the lower 2nd GTX card. Which isnt exactly a bad idea. Its rather nice IMO. Thats the trade-off of removing the hd cage and placing the hd elsewhere.

Also for those opting to run the 8800GTS version you will not have any problems IMO fitting it in this case. You can even run two GTS's in SLI and have room. The Chakra case is pretty adaptible it seems given it came out before the G80 cards.

Again I want to stress this test fit was done using my rig setup in my sig below. Others may experience a different situation. Also be aware that some of the larger aftermarket hsf wont fit due to the 250mm side fan. Since the Scythe Infinity wont fit I'm guessing the Ninja wont neither. Also the Tuniq Tower wont fit as well or any of the really big high profile hsf. The 9500 does fit however and I havent measured but I'm willing to bet the 9700 will as well since its size is only a little larger than the 9500.

I hope this info helps others.

I just got this case, a GTX, and the Zalman 9700. Just waiting for my motherboard to come in and I can let everyone know how it all fits.

Yes, Acivick, please do! I want confirmation on my measurements and I'd really like to know if the 9700 will fit as well. Also please list all the components you plan on putting in the case. I'd really like to know. 🙂

My motherboard should finally be coming in tonight. Once I get everything installed, I'll provide a further update.

Here's an update. I was able to install a Zalman CNPS9700 LED on an ASUS P5N-E with about 1cm clearance between the heatsink and the 25cm fan. My XFX 8800 GTX card was able to fit inside the case, with about 1cm clearance between it and the 3.5" drive bay.

This means that no hard drive, and assumingly no floppy drive, can be put in this bay with a GTX card in it. I had originally decided to leave the hard drive rack out to improve air flow, but this was not possible in this case.

Currently having issues with the hard drive and bad sectors, but other than that this was a pretty easy install. This case, along with the 9700 and GTX, are surprisingly quiet to the point where the sound of my DVD drive is about twice as loud as any of the fans in the case. Also worth a mention is the Corsair 520W PSU I put it. It's practically silent!

Swind,
$65 is a good price. Most I have seen go for 69.99 before shipping nowadays. I got lucky and bought mine for $55 before it became popular. I guess Central Computers didnt expect it to sell well and had it at a low price to start off.

Aicvick,
Thanks for that info and update. Hearing the 9700hsf and 8800GTX will fit is great news.
