There's plenty of open space in the world to put microwave receiver stations into locations that are scarcely populated, then wires could be run to the cities.

Of course, there would be public outcry . . . "No microwaves in ANWAR!" or somesuch.

I saw a show on the tube several years back where they had this collector on the roof of a building that took sunlight and feed it through fiber optic cables into all to rooms in a LARGE office complex. The light was just like natural sunlight in every way but one. It look out all the harmful rays that natural sunlight has. Plants grown under this system grew BETTER than the same plants grown in direct sunlight as well! The system (Lotus blossom or some such it was named as I recall) tracked the sun as it moved in the sky, and once in place, it run's entirely under it's own power!

Now why isn't THIS technology being used I wonder?

Read that a while back...they could even send very high power MW's in bursts between intermittent homing signals (to make sure the arrays are lined up before you fire a MW that could cook half of metropolis)...
