Enemy combatants in Vietnam

North Korea

As a result of a decision of the Korean Workers' Party in October 1966, in early 1967, North Korea sent a fighter squadron to North Vietnam to back up the North Vietnamese 921st and 923rd fighter squadrons defending Hanoi. They stayed through 1968, and 200 pilots were reported to have served.[139] In addition, at least two anti-aircraft artillery regiments were sent as well. North Korea also sent weapons, ammunition and two million sets of uniforms to their comrades in North Vietnam.[140] Kim Il Sung is reported to have told his pilots to "fight in the war as if the Vietnamese sky were their own".[141]

That makes USSR, China, North Korea in both the Korean war and in the Vietnam war.

I knew about South Korea from watching the "R-Point" Vietnam war movie. The Australians, and Thailand.

The Philippines makes sense, but I never heard of them there.

No idea that Canadian, Indian and Polish troops were present.

Spain sent thirteen soldiers, including doctors.[142]
😀

South Korea also sent troops, who had quite a fierce reputation among the VC and NVA. I don't know if there was a historic rivalry or something, but I've heard stories from American Vietnam vets that the Vietnamese were even ordered to avoid direct contact with the Koreans.

South Korean marines are and were some of the badasses of the bad.

The Vietnamese commies had every bit of help from every commie country in the world. Stacked deck, just like the Korean war, China and Russia were deeply involved in each "conflict". Like fighting the whole communist world.

Macarthur had the right idea.....nuke em

There were LOTS of US troops in Laos at many different times during the Vietnam war.

John Kerry ain't the only one who was there...😉

ROK marines are possibly the toughest motherfuckers I ever met...we spent about 2 weeks with a platoon of those bad-asses in 1971...

South Korean marines would go on seek and destroy missions without any guns. They would lie in wait, pop up behind a VC, deal a swift Taekwondo blow to the neck, resulting in instant death, and then disappear.

That MAY be true, but the ROK marines I knew carried a nice variety of weapons...and were VERY proficient with them.

Tae Kwando is a great hand-to hand weapon, but isn't much help in a firefight.

Very true, I just read a book by a 5th marine sniper who claimed that our South Korean friends kicked some ass.

I'll have to call bullshit on any soldier going out without a weapon.

A total of 320,000 Koreans served in Vietnam, with a peak strength (of any given time) at around 48,000. About 4,000 were killed. The Korean forces in Vietnam were frequently able to amass a kill ratio of about 25:1 compared to the average American kill ratio of less than 20:1.

The U.S Army manual on Korean participation in Vietnam states that "[a]n analysis of an action by Korean Capital Division forces during the period 2329 January 1968 clearly illustrates the Korean technique. After contact with an enemy force near Phu Cat, the Koreans reacting swiftly...deployed six companies in an encircling maneuver and trapped the enemy force in their cordon. The Korean troops gradually tightened the circle, fighting the enemy during the day and maintaining their tight cordon at night, thus preventing the enemy's escape. At the conclusion of the sixth day of fighting, 278 NVA had been KIA with the loss of just 11 Koreans, a kill ratio of 25.3 to 1.

Later in 1968 a Korean 9th Division operation titled Baek Ma [Korean for "white horse," after the White Horse Division] 9 commenced on 11 October and ended on 4 November with 382 enemy soldiers killed and the North Vietnamese 7th Battalion, 18th Regiment, rendered ineffective. During this operation, on 25 October, the eighteenth anniversary of the division, 204 of the enemy were killed without the loss of a single Korean soldier."

I bet their SS2 missiles shot down more of our planes than their pilots did.

I always thought it was common knowledge that Russians and Chinese pilots flew North Vietnamese MIGS.

Both countries were HEAVILY involved in the Vietnam war, the Russians mostly equipment and advisors, and the Chinese provided troops, training, equipment and advisors.

Koreans are shit. All it takes is one guy with "MAXIMUM STRENGTH" and they're all as good as dead... a little choppy with the fps, but dead nonetheless.

so technically, What we refer to as the Vietnam war was really WWIII ?

and another +1 to the ROK Marines. The only people I would put above them are maybe Brittish or Isreali special forces. But as far as balls go, ROK Marines are the ballsiest.

CQC bitches. Snake can do it. Why can't you?

I just finished reading the book The Last Valley. I've read over a dozen book on the Vietnam war and this book about the legendary battle in Dien Bien Phu was amazing. I highly recommend it.
