True? The seige of Stalingrad is THE epic battle of all time! I've not seen the movie in question, but Hollywood has always injected their rewritten history into such movies with few exceptions.

No doubt there were snipers, but to believe that a German and a Russian sniper were out to get each other? Give me a break!

There are several very good Historically Accurate books on the battle. What really happened makes any Hollywood story line look very lame.

Well I was planning on checking out the film today so I won't expect a whole lot out of it.

Yeah, it looked good, but then I said no and went to watch SNATCH, a very good movie. What about that movie coming out with the 4 black guys that "grow up" CHEESE DICK!

Yep...it's true....in fact the Russian sniper wrote a book after the war about it. He and the German were the top 2 snipers in WWII and they knew that they were both in the same area and were hunting each other. I'll have to find the name of the book for you, it's been a LONG time since I read it, but gimme some time and I'll find it.

If you are interested in sniping and enjoy reading I highly reccommend books by Stephen Hunter such as "Point of Impact" Any book with his hero Bob Lee Stagger is a great read. Black Light" is very good but with less sniping action.

His books are a series and some include him and a german hunting each other.

Was hoping "Enema at the gate" was based on one of his books but no such luck. Would have been way better.

Well....just got back from watching it at a matinee. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars. The action sequences at the beginning of the film were really good and I thought it portrayed the Soviet "human wave" attacks and political officers in a realistic manner. Yeah, the love story aspect was overblown but it was something I could deal with. The last 20 minutes was typical Hollywood tripe and is the primary reason I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars.
I still think it's worth checking out.

EDIT: If you enjoy WWII history at ALL....read the book! It goes into detail the ENTIRE siege of Stalingrad and the destuction of the German 6th Army. The sniper duel was only ONE chapter out of the book.

Everybody's a critic... I thought it was a pretty decent movie. It was entertaining at the least. The Mexican was pretty good too, i really liked it. I though Pitt did a good job and again, it was entertaining at the least. If ya'll can make a better movie, be my guest.

Pearl Harbor comes out on Memorial Day, so May 28.

How did Ed Harris do in "Enemy at the Gates?"

thebestMAX...I've read 'Point of Impact' several times. One of the best books I've ever read! Now THAT book would make a GREAT movie!

Ed Harris could not decide if he was going to use a subtle German accent or just use his American accent, so he used both. I really wish they could have expanded more on Ed Harris' character. They mention a little about his motivations, but really don't touch upon him too much at all.

Why do Russians sounds like Brits with cockney accents? Strange ..

This movie really lacked a gritty and realistic feel like Saving Private Ryan did. SPR had a very realistic feel and thanks to lack of score (most of the time I believe), it didn't seem overly dramatic - just realistic.

The thing I liked about Traffic is that the Mexican's actually spoke Spanish. I preferred that much more to people speaking English with Mexican accents, or Russians speaking with an English accent.

And Wuming touched upon Apocalypse Now - which I feel is one of the best movies ever made. My friend's father was in the Special Forces for the South Vietnamese military. He said that the war scene with the Air Cavalry was pretty spot on. I felt the movie was very intense, though for a Green Beret, Marlon Brando was too large and in charge.

Wasn't that bad:p I did get impatient during some of the relationship scenes.. as cute as racheal weiss is..i wanted to see more sniping action. Where they did have sniping.. it was darn kewl:) Oh yea, that one mid air jump shot ed harris's char gets off seems a little unrealistic. Is that even possible? I'm mean by skill, not luck.

If you want to see a war movie.. this will do:p

i thought it was good, plus the love story suckered my gf to go with me =].

The sniping was excellent, i thought. Some of scenes were really suspenseful. I could have lived without the unneeded sex scene though.

Anyone else notice that the actor who played the beast in "Beauty and the Beast" series was his mentor?
