Endless shut down time since upgrades ???

Since we upgraded numerous W2K and IE6 components last week the time required for the computer to shut down has gone from several seconds to around 1 min. We already had all the service packs installed and it was just a pile of seperate updates that we installed.

Does anyone have any idea of what happened or had similar experiences. Any solutions ?

I had the exact same issue. What I did to "fix it" was to shut down my Zone Alarm and iTouch software before I shut down my PC. Solves the issue 90% of the time. THere seems to be some sort of compatability issue with the newer software.

Yeah, try closing programs you have open right before shutdown and see what happens. The oher thing you can do is bite the bullet and wish windows was better

If you updated a bunch of windows stuff, make sure all your hardware drivers are up to date as well. If a new windows component that was installed is trying to access a device with drivers that were not optimized for the update, that might be the issue...

Most of the time I try to close all the open programs, that has been a habbit for a long time. If for some reason I do not shut some down then the computer shut down takes even longer.

I timed it last night with all programs closed and it took 68 seconds after the shut down was executed to when the computer finally turned off. Most of the time the screen was in the "saving your settings" mode. The HDD is not working while this is happening so it seems to be something that does not need sorting out on the drive.

I have the exact same prob. THis AM, I shut down after everything was closed, same problem. It didn't start after I installed SP3, it happened when I had a primary drive failure and replaced it. There might be something open you don't know about. Check out control panel for running programs or TSRs. I've just been biting the bullet, in a sense I'm glad it's not just me. But really, most of the time if I close the programs indicated I don't have the issue. It's all I can offer, I hope somebody can offer something more concrete. Do you have DX9 installed? Just a thought, check for hardware compatability. Backward compatable my butt. I had to upgrade my video (still not installed), but it needed upgrading anyway.

Here is a tip from Mossman in this thread

I had this problem on W2K SP3, fixed it with the Group Policy Editor (maybe it's the same for XP?)

Run GPEDIT.MSC

Computer Config > Admin Templates > System > Logon

Modify "Maximum retries to unload & update user profile". By default it was set to 60 (seconds), try reducing it to say, 15 (seconds)

I'm going to give this a try on my dad's Win2k SP3 system, which certainly exhibits the behavior in question. I don't think this really addresses the root issue, which may be that some services cannot unload because they're still in use. Well done, that did the trick. I changed it to 15 and volia ! the shout down time was around 15 seconds.
