Endless Beep

I put my first PC together, and everything looks fine..except, when we turn the power on, we get annoying beeps. Sounds like alarm beeps (lasts about 10 secs and shuts off, then on again). Any ideas..suggestions? Thanks in advance!

If it sounds like an alarm or police siren then you have a HEAT problem! Very bad, you must not have your heatsink/fan combo seated right or you forgot to plug in the fan or it's plugged into the wrong fan header and your bios has the CPU fan speed warning turned on or you didn't use thermal paste, or the overheat warning temp in the bios is set to low, ect.....

BTW, if the beeps are just a steady repeating beep...beep then you need to reseat your memory and make sure it's in there all the way and make sure the memory is compatible with your motherboard.

Thanks, Dapunisher.

heatsink/fan combo seated right -- will check..but which one is the heatsink? We also have 3 fans hooked up.
you forgot to plug in the fan - they're plugged, but will check if plugged right
your bios has the CPU fan speed warning turned on or , or the overheat warning temp in the bios is set to low - we haven't hooked it up on the monitor to see what's on the bios. just powered it on..and got beeps.
you didn't use thermal paste - that we didn't. does that really make the difference? will try with it.

Thanks from a fellow Floridian!

No problem 🙂 And YES!!!!!! YOU MUST USE THERMAL PASTE!!!! otherwise the CPU can't efficently transfere heat to the heatsink (the metal cooler with the fan on it you attached to the CPU) That is your problem right there 😉 just put a thin coat of thermal paste on the little metal square in the center of the CPU (put a dab in the center of the metal square then spread it around until a thin coat covers the metal area) then carefully reseat your heatsink/fan combo and plug it back in to the CPU fan header and you should be alright, as long as the CPU didn't fry :Q As long as it wasn't on too long that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck and post back how you make out 🙂

It's a she. What's a retail box CPU? We have an AMD Athlon CPU.
What he means (and he has a good point) is did you buy a CPU that came in the AMD box with the heatsink already included or does your heatsink have a pad on the bottom attached to it like a piece of very thin square tape that looks gray or silverish usually. you were using a heatsink and fan on top of the CPU correct? regardless of wether it has a thermal pad or not.

ohhh ok..it did come with that (thermal pad). so that means we don't need to use the gel?

btw, after resetting the memory card, the beeps went away. so, thanks!

Well, I still feel like a bonehead for not considering you might have a thermal pad, but I'm glad you are up and running now 🙂
