"End Program -- SW" window when I go to shut down

So I'm cruising along, installing software on a new machine I put together from spare parts yesterday. After loading Windows 2000 Pro and the necessary Windows Updates, I then go to install DirectX 9.0C from Microsoft's site.

The installation goes fine, but when I go to restart my machine, a window appears in the middle of the screen and says, "End Program -- SW. Please Wait." So I wait, and watch the blue 'status bar' move from left to right across the top of the window, and it reaches the end. It then says, "This program is not responding. If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now, click End Now." And there are two buttons to choose from (to click): End Now or Cancel. If I click End Now, the machine shuts down. If I click Cancel, the machine obviously doesn't shut down.

I've rebooted several times, and this problem occurs every time. Any of you guys know what to do to fix this? I'm not about to wait for that stupid "End Program --SW" window to appear and wait for it to do it's thing and then have to click "End Now" everytime I shut the machine down or restart it.

And since you can't uninstall DirectX, and there's no System Restore with W2K Pro, now what??? Grrrrr .... :frown:

Oh, and I searched Microsoft's site for "End Program -- SW" to no avail. A Google search was equally futile. I really don't want to have to reformat ....

Check task manager for running processes prior to shutting down, see what's running that shouldn't be and look into it.
