Basically, i have a PIII 1GHz with a near death mobo that's picking up dust in my basement for the last 2 months. (See sig in old rig) So now i'd like to have some sort of linux fileserver for the house so i can store a bunch of pics, mp3s, movies that could be accessed by any computer on the network. That PIII would be perfect for the job and an occasion for me to learn linux a little more. The system currently boots up but with a lot of difficulty (blown caps).

Problem: i'm cash strapped since i bought the new rig (see sig) so i was looking to get something either used or very cheap but i can't find anything good in my area (south of Qc City, North of the great Maine wilderness) because it is either a new motherboard with installation... (125$ CDN) or a used one with a cpu and memory (which i have 4 bars) that costs nearly 200$ CDN...
So basically i need a motherboard around 60-80$ CDN that supports PC133 memory and has an agp 4x slot. Also, i don't mind if there existed a socket A Cpu/Mobo combo somewhere within that price range that would beat my PIII 1GHz. I,ve looked on ebay, but i'm quite a noobie on this.

cliff notes: 1. see sig, mobo near dead, need replacement, mobo only or socket A mobo/cpu combo
price range: Under 80$ cdn (exchange rate makes it a little over 65$ US)

i just want places to look, and asking if a Sckt a mobo is not feasible...

"WTB - Canuck - P3 mb or XP mb/cpu supporting SDRAM" in FS/T forum here.

Lots of people here have old parts after upgrades. I'd offer to sell you one of my spares but don't want the cross-border hassle.

You can get eternal hard drives now that plug into wireless routers for very cheap. There are also wireless external hard drives in the works. It seems silly to have a computer just as a file server with the technology that exists today IMO. Just buy an external enclosure for the HD in that system, sell off the CPU, and save yourself some money.

Good point, but Mokmo418 did say:
That PIII would be perfect for the job and an occasion for me to learn linux a little more.
Certainly for adding just a single HD to a home LAN, an enclosure plus networking appliance makes sense.

Meh, he can always dual-boot the A64 if he wants to learn Linux.

lol i see your suggestions...
and they're good...
those networked hard disk enclosures look neat but expensive
