Well one big thing where we would have minimal warning for a catastrophic event would be a meteor coming at us from the outer galaxy. We would detect it with little time to do anything, and depending on the size it could mean complete destruction. Where's Superman when you need him?

Edit: Read that as how would you know if you only have a week left. Oh well.
