Any book recommendations?

Alas, Babylon was a pretty good post-apocalyptic community survivalist book.

Fire up my M35A2 (buying one within the year), load up my AR-15, .22 (small game hunting), my .40 springfield, my 2 drums of water, my 2 drums of rice, if my room mate is also alive, take him along, otherwise grab his AR-15, his .22, his shotgun (I don't like shotguns so I never bought one) and his .40. I would tow my electric generator with me. I would also take simple tools along as well as siphon what fuel I could from any vehicles around (the multi-fuel engine in the M35A2 allows me to run on near anything). I would travel to my roommate's folk's house as they live on a nice property with large pond, large hunting areas, and some farming. Of course, with 5% of the population remaining I could always expand the area I live in and use as needed.

The 5 ton winch on the truck will come in handy to set up structures, clearing debris, and what not, so I will try to conserve as much fuel as possible for that use.

First thing I would do is try to get a working well for fresh clean water. After that I would make it a priority to produce some combustion fuels that the truck can handle. Beyond that, I would have to keep others from intruding on my supplies and would welcome them into adjacent lands to offer some group protection without encroachment.

I would attempt to bring the survivors together to create some semblance of normalcy. I would harken back to a time of civilization and prosperity. Recall the days of yore when a person could send a message across the land for mere pennies. Such a thing gives people hope.

Yes. I would become....The Postman.

Get a generator going. Scavenge some old computers. Start coding some forum software to rebuild Anandtech.

I'll supply you with food and water, as well as provide you with security while you perform this task that is required for the rebuilding of civilization.

I can't imagine the horror of being stuck with a bunch atoters with no computers/internet.

You could build in 2 days, in the middle of a nuclear wasteland, forum software better than the dark abyss that is FuseCrap :(

This. Safety in numbers will be more important than ever. Find the Sane Neighbours/Towns people,, stick with them. Only some will resort to Violence and will be easily spotted and eliminated if the Sane work together.

People are going to be very wary of Strangers, so moving long distances away from your Home will be very dangerous. Also, as Communities Organize and force out the Violent, the Violent will be forced to roam the countryside. Being in the Countryside all alone will be a Death Trap, no matter how "prepared" you think you are.

So, nick would stock up on water, then drive to a lake. Ummmm, not sure if I'd call that intelligent or not. I'm leaning toward, no.
I think it'd be a lot simpler to transport a water purifier.

Me, I'd stay put & increase the percentage of food I raise/grow for myself to 100%. I have well water, so that's covered. At the moment, I certainly have enough food to last at least 1 year; probably perpetually if I wanted to eat a lot of chicken. And, I'm not an idiot, so even without electricity, getting water from the well is no problem. (Especially since the well is in my basement.) I live in an area with a very high Amish population, and I'm not even sure their lives would be significantly disrupted by WWIII. Thus, my community would probably do just fine.

And, as my kids just left for college in the last couple weeks, my wife and I have been thoroughly cleaning the house, cleaning out drawers, etc. It's amazing how many drawers I find that have a pocketful or two of ammo. How many of my hunting jackets have a hundred or so rounds in the pockets. And, I'd probably be safe as I really doubt there's anything of tactical advantage in my area. We don't even have a Wal-Mart to drop a nuke on in this country. I don't think the Russians/Chinese/whoever really care about an Amish neighborhood.

The better question is why not? They are dirt cheap, big heavy trucks. My friends do woodsball paintball and would love to have a military vehicle available to them during gigs plus they are planning on getting a paintball compressor + scuba tanks that would require a hefty vehicle to pull around.

Besides, I have wanted one for about 10 years now. Soon it shall be mine.

I'm not sure.

Possibly set sail on my dad's boat (it has sails and an engine). It would need a water purifier and we would need to:
1. Stock up on tinned / non-perishable foods.
2. Fit a wind generator / solar panels.
3. Drums full of fuel (just in case).
4. Have fishing gear.
5. Have an extensive medical kit.

Thats all I can think of.

Id grab my .40 and take my girl in our SUV and go raid a local supermarket for their bottled water and all the canned goods I can get my hands on. I'd drive up to my grandparents lakehouse up in Wisconsin and board the place up and take refuge there.

Call me weird, but to me its fun to think about different situations like this and think about how you would react.

Statistically speaking, you would do none of those things...you'd be dead. :)

Write to the BBC. They have a British consumer programme called "Watchdog" which is aimed at nonsense in stores and TV content, and it would be an excellent opportunity to write "Dear BBC, I am a little disgruntled by recent developments. Please explain/rectify this issue which cannot be countenanced".
