End of the pay phone ?

I suppose it won't be long till the pay phone is entirely gone.
You need a handful of change or a credit card to use one now anyway 🙁

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-...2007/0004715282&EDATE=
SAN ANTONIO, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T)
announced today plans to exit the shrinking pay phone business by the end
of 2008. Existing contracts and customer service commitments will continue
to be honored during the period that the business is being phased out.

AT&T's Public Communications unit has continued to experience
significant pressure from reduced pay phone usage, primarily as a result of
the growth of alternative communications choices, such as wireless phones
and personal communication devices.

The company plans to phase out both public pay phones and phones
provided under contracts at government correctional facilities through the
end of next year. All customers will receive advance notification of
specific plans as well as information on other potential providers and
product options.

It dosen't surprise me.

I'ts probably because if they have employees that go around emptying the phone change boxes and though his whole run he's only getting two quarters AT&T is losing money. But, I believe they should put phones in certian areas for emergency purposes.

What? No way! You're saying that we need to pay money to use a pay phone?

😉

wait, "government correctional facilities"? no more phone call after being arrested?

From how it reads they won't be installing any more new payphones like they usually do. The phones in existance right now will be grandfathered in. Eventually when people have them removed for whatever reason they won't install another so the payphone population will get so low till they say get rid of them all....

Payphones sucked anyways. They were always greasy at the mouthpieces and you don't know what went on with them....

It used to be that a quarter would allow you to place a call, not anymore.
Still it was somewhat re-assuring that you could place a call if your cell phone didn't work and your in the middle of nowhere.
There always seemed to be a phone booth around somewhere.

Oh well, times change.

Not if you need a hardline to get out of the matrix.

Looks like the machines' plans are coming to fruition.

They had an article in one of the local papers last week about 1 of the last phone booths in Northern Virginia. Verizon said they have no plans at the moment to remove it but if something happens to it that would require repair they would likely remove it at that point. They also said that records show that calls are placed on it daily.

I can't even remember the last time I used a pay phone--it has been a very long time. Hell, I've had cell phones for over 10 years, so I guess that is why.

I don't get archaic either...it's a phone...what are you looking for Super Breakout on it?

Payphones are the last of communicating without credentials. IMHO this is the reason the phone companies are being pressured/paid to get rid of them.

I was at the AT&T Global NOC last month and they have a mini-museum there with amongst other interesting artifacts, a real life model of their first ever made payphone. It was pretty cool to be able to look at and touch something so historic.

BTW it was .05c to make a call back then.

i read in "The Week" recently that phone booths generate more revenue from their advertisements than the actual function of calling.

Must be all the rich people afraid of cell phones and home phones, or maybe they like the ambiance of their local gas station.
