I have some home movies captured from my cam, I need to make AVI files of those, I want to compress them in DivX Format, I went to divx.com & found they have both free version & Pro version, well, all I need is to encode a few movies which are in mpg format to divx format, which codec do I need to do it, will DivX Free encode it or do I need DivX Pro to encode, if that is so then DivX free is only for decoding purpose & for encoding we ned DivX Pro

Actually, you'll need Dr. Divx to encode the movies to Divx format. It's not free, but it does have a 14-day trial I think.

You could also try the guides over at Doom9.org and Videohelp.com for alternative ways.

No. You don't have to buy anything.

Downlaod the free codec from divx.com (or download a codec pack from doom9.org).

You can then use VirtualDub to encode the mpeg's.

Yeah, Xvid rocks.

You can also download the latest Xvid codec from doom9.org and use VirtualDub to encode your mpeg's with Xvid.
