I am working on a friends system. He has a relatively new and clean XP MM edition installation. All drivers and patches are up to date. However, when his HP 832C is attached using the USB connection the computer dings as it "sees" the USB device but refuses to install the drivers and fully recognize the computer. I attached his printer to my system and it immediately installed it and looking at the registry before and after, also installed USBPrint into the enumerator section. On his this does not happen and USBPrint is not installed. I have done a lot of research and attempted fixes to no avail. I imported my registry key and that did not resolve it. I also deleted all USB support in the enumerator and when the system restarted it had to first detect them and get the USB kybd and mouse running. When it booted into his account the install printer window did start and seemed to identify and install the 832C. However, upon opening the printer control I found out the printer still did not function and also found in the registry that the USBPrint was not there. I am back to square one after thinking maybe this problem was solved. Any suggestions to get this working would be appreciated. I am considering a repair install of XP MM but hate to go that far if there is a quicker solution, and that may not solve the problem anyway. I will replace the USBPrint.inf file tonight and maybe the support files to see if that works. The system is a Dell 9100 MM system and all other devices seem to work fine on the USB ports. Thanks in advance.

The proper way to install my HP printer is to start the driver install, and at some point it prompts to plug in the printer.

For those interested I got my problem resolved. I was very suspicious of the files necessary to support USB printing. I therefor copied from my system all of the USB related INF files, at least ones that appeared related to the print function, as well as the 2 driver files from Windows\system32\drivers from my machine to the problem machine. I then attempted to attach the printer with no luck. I therefor went back into the registry and deleted the USB key from the enumerator section. I rebooted the machine and after it had detected the USB ports, it booted. I had previously disconnected the printer so I then connected it. XP immediately detected it, installed USB printer support, and then the printer. I was still leery but ran a couple of print jobs and it worked fine. I am not sure if I replaced a corrupt file or possibly that one of the 2 driver files may have been missing, but it is working and I learned some new things.
