Enabling DMA?

I recently installed a TDK 24/10/40 burner and the directions had me check the dma box for the drive. Admittedly not sure what it does, i checked the FAQ here and some of the replies about dma. Now I wonder should i enable it for my 40gb maxtor drive. It is a 7200rpm ata/66. I am using win me. My motherboard is a p3v4x. The hdd is on the primary ide as master and the TDK is on the secondary as master.

I appreciate your responses and assistance. I probably would not question this so much, but when you check the box you get that little window warning if the drive can support dma or not. Since on the burner the instructions tell you to do this i did not think twice but not sure about the hdd.

This is related....when I boot up the PC it says the CD is running ATA 33 and the internal zip is PIO. Is this correct?

Should the DMA box be checked for the zip?

It's a Lite On 16x CD-RW as a master on the secondary IDE and the zip is a 100 internal as slave on the secondary IDE. The HDD is the master on the primary IDE.

The normal rule of thumb is the enable DMA on a cd-rw unless that cause bad burns and coasters. ALso enable DMA on the HD. Enabling DMA will improve performance.
