Enabling DMA support for CD Burner in Win2k HELP!

troubledshooter

One of the big performance boosters for many systems is enabling DMA on EIDE CD/DVD drives correct?

I just tried to do so a few hours ago, switching both drives on my second chain (burner and DVD) to DMA if available...both continue to run on PIO. Am i doing something wrong here? I am 99% sure I am using a pair of UDM66 cables......

I just read it can be tricky to enable this on win2k...

any ideas?

thanks

BTW can setting RAM to CAS2 from CAS3 actually slow down performance in any situations?

Well many IDE CD-R(W) drives don't take kindly to having DMA enabled. To enable DMA in win2k you go to device manager, hard disk controllers, then there is primary channel and secondary channel and the actual device listed. Go to the properties for the channel, and in the advanced setting tab it has master and slave, and a box to select PIO Mode or DMA if availible.

I just saw that you were setting to DMA. If the drives continue to run in PIO it means that the drives are not capable of DMA mode.

well, one thing is for sure, the plextor 12/10/32A should be able to run at dma mode jsut fine. is it the master or slave drive on the secondary ide chain?

I have it set to slave, and I too know it should be able to run in DMA just fine....I have it as slave since for most CD's I use the toshiba just to keep the wear on the plextor down a bit.

any more insights?

(Warrenton, I know how to get that far but the REMAIN in PIO mode after I make that change. As above I KNOW the plex. can go DMA, dunno about the tosh.)

thanks again!

The plextor drive does not like to be set as slave. I tried that once and it wouldn't keep the settings for dma, even after I check it and reboot. Put it on master and see if it'll work.

No it shouldn't affect the performance of your dvd drive....the only exception might be if you burn and watch dvd's at the same time. But that will still have better performance than if you had dma disabled for both.

yeah, definately switch htem around. The DVD drive being a slave/reader won't have performance issues. Burning without dma on the 12/10/32A does have issues, mainly high cpu usage.

I don't worry about DMA. Only my DVD and one of my hard drives are IDE, and each is on thier own channel as master. They default to DMA always so i don't do squat.
