Enabling AHCI mode AFTER Windows 7 Installation

hello! now before you say, "oh great, another one of these," ive done a ton of searching (i currently have 20+ tabs open, all on this) and my problem i believe is more basic (and perhaps nooby). maybe i havnt searched or read enough, but right now im a little overwhelmed with all the data and settings ive been reading through.

so i made the mistake of installing Windows 7 Pro 64 on my new X-25M 80g in IDE mode instead of AHCI and am trying to do everything i can to increase my performance. here is my first CDM...

since, ive disabled system restore on my SSD...

not what i was expecting, but my main concern here is switching from IDE to AHCI. ive done the whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci to 0 bit, but when i go into my BIOS, this is what i see. where do i change it to AHCI???

before going any further, here is my system's relevant specs... (please let me know if you need to know any additional)

AMD 64b 3500+
K8NS Ultra-939 mobo
3 gigs ram
Sapphire HD 3850 AGP
Intel X-25M 80gig (primary)
WD Black Caviar 640 (secondary)

is it possible that my Gigabyte K8 Triton board doesnt have the AHCI ability? if not, is there a certain spot my X-25 should be plugged into?

any direct help or relevant linking would be greatly appreciated as i have been out of the PC modding loop lately. my rig is old, but ive just recently upgraded the storage (1. X-25M 2. Black Caviar 3: 1TB WD external) and plan on doing the case/cooling next, then mobo/proc/ram/video last. i rarely game now, so keeping everything top of the line really isnt that big of a priority anymore. plus, the idea of dumping a lump sum of cash on a new rig and skimping on the less important parts bc of budget isnt very appealing to me.

I'm not familiar with that board, but you would normal set it from "Serial ATA Function". Your's is set as RAID, does that function allow it to be set as AHCI?

just checked and the two options available are RAID and BASE.

Edit: im looking to get the latest bios drivers, atm

On an older NF3/NF4 (and many older NF5) board like that, there won't be any "AHCI" mode because NVIDIA was using its own proprietary equivalent (driver and option ROM). Try RAID mode instead with the latest drivers.

BTW, the SATA interface on that board is limited to a MAX 1.5Gb/sec second or roughly 150MB/sec.

ahh, i was afraid of that. i found VERY little info on AHCI with the search of my mobo. i did find this though...

^ this gave me hope, but if what youre saying is true, whether i update my bios or not im not going to be able to take advantage of AHCI unless i upgrade the mobo? as for the 1.5Gb cap, does my Crystal Disk scans look proportionate to that speed limit? i wanna get the most out of my SSD and am willing to do anything except for upgrading more hardware, atm.

I running a Dell E521 here with Nforce430. Only BIOS SATA option I see are Raid ON and OFF. No IDE or AHCI option either. I tried switching on Raid but then after booting, it goes into the Raid setup screen and I don't know what to do after that. I have the Vertex, not Raided. How can I get it to work under Raid mode single drive?

i use raid on my dell it works great. IDE or RAID what you think i'm going to pick 😉

Hey can you help a fellow Dell user with Raid setup? I assume you are using a SSD in your Dell. Are you doing a true R0 setup with multiple SSDs or just picking RAID in BIOS with a single SSD? Thanks.

There's your answer. AHCI or not, you simply won't get any better performance.
It appears that FAQ does not even apply to your board. It discusses a case involving an Intel chipset, not NVIDIA.
many thanks for the info. it looks like ill be reading up on mobos sooner than i had originally anticipated. im still enjoying the new SSD over my old Raptor, but guess i wont enjoy its full potential until i upgrade even more -_-

Since only once (sequential read) you get bottleneck from 1.5gbps SATA, don't expect much more from AHCI. I've seen some benchmarks long time ago how AHCI (NCQ) does not impact that much on normal workstation use.

true, even if i could go AHCI on this board id be limited to 1.5gb. im just gonna sit tight until i can upgrade my other components.
