I work part-time (25 hours per week) for a utilities company as an IT intern (currently pursuing master's degree). I inquired about full-time hours (40 hours per week) during the summer, to which they responded that my wage would be decreased. Okay...wait...what?

So, long story short, if I work more hours (with a lower wage), I will get paid an extra $120 per month for 60 more hours of work. Worth it?

LOL.

I don't think so Tim!

EDIT: If you go full time, do you get benefits which you weren't previously?

I'm guessing by going full time they have to give you full medical benefits and such, so in essence you are being paid more.

They obviously have a fixed budget for your position, but it does seem a little odd to offer you more hours with a reduced wage rate.

yup. Depends on if you get any other benefits from them by being full time. Health, 401k match, etc.

I've heard of this from others, by him going full time the employer has to include the benefit package that's offered other full timers, a friend of mine was offered a job recently with 2 different wage rates, one with benny's and one without. Not a bad idea if your spouse already has you enrolled in his/her insurance, that way you don't have to pay for it twice..

I've got the same situation here. Well multiply the wage by more than a factor of 10, but same idea.

I work about half time for two companies. I discussed going full time with one (the other is unstable work) and their offer was to let me work full time if I cut my wages 33%/hour. Even adding the maximum benefits possible (9% of salary), that doesn't even come close to making it worth it for me.

In your case, no I wouldn't work those extra hours at an effective rate of $2/hour.

well...you are just an intern. Also, in some states, if you work 40 hours, you have to be given benefits of a full timer.

Hells no. I'm surprised they didn't just tell you there was no full time position available rather than suggest something so stupid. If you were getting dinged for benefits it would make some sense, but no; f-that.

Yep, that's the way it is here in Californistan. Plus you have to pay into the lovely State Disability Insurance system.

Yeah, I might talk to my super about it more to see what the hell that is all about. Not sure if he can really do anything. One of the analysts is leaving at some point this year so hopefully I will be able to get into his job. At this point, I've decided it is time to move on to full-time employment as I have been working as an intern at a couple companies since 2007.

With very few exceptions, you have to pay into that even as a part-time worker...

The State Disability Insurance (SDI) withholding rate for 2011 is 1.2 percent. The taxable wage limit is $93,316 for each employee per calendar year. The maximum to withhold for each employee is $1,119.79.

They just changed our medical plan @ my job...

I had better healthcare insurance when I worked part time at a pizza joint years ago when I was going to college.

Also... I'm curious in what field you're persuing a masters if you're working as an IT intern.
