Places in the US have gotten rid of Thanksgiving as a racist holiday.

It's just another day. Just like Christmas is these days.

If you want to celebrate it, do it on your own time. :D

I'll be shopping online, anyway. :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_(United_States)#Controversy

The moves of retailers to begin holiday sales during Thanksgiving Day (as opposed to the traditional day after) has been criticized as forcing (under threat of being fired) low-end retail workers to work odd hours and handle atypical, unruly crowds on a day reserved for rest.[72] In response to this controversy, Macy's and Best Buy (both of which planned to open on Thanksgiving, even earlier than they had the year before) both stated in 2014 that most of their Thanksgiving Day shifts were filled voluntarily by employees who would rather have the day after off instead of Thanksgiving itself.[73][74] Blue laws in several states in the Northeast prevent retailers in those states from opening on Thanksgiving; such retailers typically open at midnight the day after to circumvent the laws as much as legally possible.[74]

Big fucking deal. Doctors, nurses, cops, firefighters, and a myriad of other folks have to work the holidays too. Don't like it? Find something with holidays off.

Add gas stations/convenience stores, movie theaters (this is a big one on Christmas, and I wonder how many who are bitching about Thanksgiving don't give a second thought to seeing a movie on Christmas), many US call centers, etc. Heard no one bitching about this issue prior to stores opening up.

that said, I am firmly against shopping on Thanksgiving, but I don't begrudge those that open, those that work and those that decide their time is worth shopping.

You can see the growing desperation in the retail sector. A mixture of economic stagnation and a growing culture of thrift (due to economic stagnation) seems to be killing sales. Black Friday somehow turned into Black Week. Boxing Day is now Boxing Week. Places put up Christmas decorations before the Halloween decorations have been taken down.

Maybe retailers don't understand this, but being open more days doesn't mean more sales. Do you think I'll buy more Christmas gifts simply because the store was open until 10pm instead of 9pm, or it was open at 6am on a holiday? They're doing this because they're running out of ideas. They've tried cutting prices, offering store credit cards, price matching, don't pay for a year, and none of it worked. Sales are still not improving. The only thing left to try is being open at weird times like holidays or 3am on a weekday.

This is a great post. Your second paragraph was exactly my line of thinking last night. My wife and oldest son work retail. Both of their stores are opening on Thanksgiving. So far, only the son has to work, 5pm - 2am.

How is being "forced" to work on Thanksgiving any different than being forced to work on, say, Fridays? My company is forcing me to work on Fridays under threat of being fired! Alert the presses!

You can easily protest against the stores by voluntarily not shopping on TG.

If the dollars and demand is there, you can't blame the stores for chasing it.

Where's the sympathy for movie theater employees? My god they work every holiday because they're expected to by the public.
