Employees Forced to Work on Thanksgiving Day or Face Being Fired

Tyler Barton, 24, is university student and a manager at a national discount retailer in Oklahoma. He won’t give away more details of his employment because of a non-disclosure agreement he signed when first joining the company. But he will say that he’s less than thrilled with having to work on Thanksgiving. “I’m disappointed about it, sure,” he says. “This is a holiday that I spend with my family.

Barton, unlike many retail workers scheduled to clock in on November 27, will not be paid overtime for his services.

Kmart is opening at a shocking 6am on Thanksgiving morning. While Kmart’s official statement is that its “stores do their very best to staff with seasonal associates and those who volunteer to work holidays,” employees have anonymously claimed otherwise.

6am Thanksgiving... why, in a couple years they'll get Thanksgiving off again as the sales day moves on ahead.

The only god most retailers worship is the almighty dollar. That being said, if people didn't shop these sales, the retailers wouldn't feel the need to be open then.

You've got the cart before the horse. Nobody demands the store open at 0600. Just like grocery stores have trained consumers to like unripe fruit and veggies. It's the "everything all the time" mentality.

This. On the other hand, who is there to effectively call employers out and shame them for having no sense of decency towards their employees? Nobody. Sure, people will complain, but the dollars will keep rolling in and even more places will open on Thanksgiving next year. Rinse and Repeat.

Honestly, unless you qualify as emergency services and/or utilities, there is no reason that you should be called in to work that day. We tend to forget that people are just that...people....and that they need time to rest and immerse themselves in what makes life worth living.

Most people who work at retailers love working holidays. They usually get double-time-and-a-half in addition to possibly getting comp time on top of that.

People at retailers fight over the holidays.

Nowhere did I say the consumers were demanding anything. Every year, in search of more profits, the retailers have been moving back the time these sales start. Trying to one- up each other. Shoppers keep showing up to the sales. If no one showed up, the retailer would decide that being open on thanksgiving was a bad idea and waste of payroll.

I think it sucks, but stores open because they make money during these hours. If you work retail and don't understand you may/will have to work during the holidays at this point you really aren't paying attention.

Here, let me fix that for you.

don't like it? an illegal will take that job....with absolutely no consequences for the employer to do so.

Again, who is to effectively call companies to task for treating employees as replaceable machines instead of people? Nobody. So, the American citizen on the brink financially is out of a job and one who came to this country illegally is substituted for the exact same exploitation that the citizen was being subjected to. Same shit, different color (and possibly language).

Not in my prior experience in retail (Best Buy). Not all companies give you holiday pay, even though mine did back then. Besides, working those days is completely hectic. It is pure hell even for those desperate to get that extra dough. They don't "love" working then. They need the money because the pay in retail generally blows. Given the choice, I would wager that most, if not all employees would rather see the store closed on Thanksgiving. People can buy their TV another day.

As Lewis Black said the other night (and I paraphrase here), forcing a store to open in a mall on Thanksgiving or face a fine from the landlord, that's like sharia law for capitalism. But if you're an employee who wants off for Thanksgiving, well, 'you can punch in and shut the f*** up. You can see your family in January.'

In high school, I worked in a grocery store and would routinely pick up morning hours on thanksgiving for the time and a half pay we would get. But the store also closed at 3 on Thanksgiving, giving time for people to spend time with their families. On the other hand, I'm sure there are a lot of places that won't pay extra for working on the holiday and I can also see where a grocery store and a retail store might be viewed just a little differently for having any thanksgiving hours.

Meh, holidays are just another day. I have worked every holiday in both the Navy and my current job though now I get paid overtime plus an eight hour holiday pay for working on a holiday.

Sadly, I've noticed more and more people have to be taught how to celebrate.

Did you not read the OP many of these people are NOT being paid extra for working on thanksgiving. Many retailers have stopped paying extra for holiday working, and just fire people who refuse.

Big fucking deal. Doctors, nurses, cops, firefighters, and a myriad of other folks have to work the holidays too. Don't like it? Find something with holidays off.

Both my brothers want to be scheduled as much around the holidays as they can - (1) for the increased pay, & (2) so they can purposefully skip out on spending time with relatives.

And if stores werent open that day people couldnt shop. Works both ways. Id rather retail stores stay closed and let people enjoy a family holiday.
