Other that a nuclear device, I want to know if it would be possible to create a device which would emit EMP. I know in some forms, large capacitors discharging will create short bursts of EMP. I am wonder if it would be possible to make a circuit which would create a stream of emp, not neccessarily a long stream, just sufficent to make a differentce. Do any of the EEs out tehre have any ideas to make one of these, if they are even possible.

Well, any kind of spark gap generator will produce a lot of noise, which could be considered a very crude EMP. If you could apply enough voltage between two points to continually ionize the air you would have continous noise. The bigger the gap, the more 'EMP' generated. We have a machine at school that puts out about 6kV and will jump a spark about a foot. We're always careful to turn off cell phones and take off our watches when we play with that thing. Any semiconductor-based electronics have a good chance of being fried. I'm sure there are more elegant ways to generate an EMP, but what I described is very simple and doesn't require fissionable material.

Any electronic device is capable of emitting an EMP. All an EMP is is a magnetic field that disrupts the flow of electrons. When an atomic bomb goes off the EMP it generates is so powerful that the magnetic field will actually fry any circuit that does not have an EMP shield with electricity running through it. If you want to know what could create a little but powerful EMP, look up at your telephone poles. The electric transformers on them are able to produce an EMP if they are severely overloaded. The army is actually looking into using EMP bombs, rather than "actual" bombs. These EMP bombs use explosives and capacitors to create an EMP field that could turn a First-World country into a Third-World country in a few seconds. If the EMP bomb was powerful enough, someone could destroy all electronic equipment is a pretty substantion radius from the point of emission.

A calculator can be shielded by just a simple box and the display doesn't even have to be shielded as long as there are not chips in back of the display.
Another way to do damage without the explosion and getting immediate notice is using a van and backing the van into an approperate distance or against a wall and angle and using microwave. For example say 25,000 watt into a 43db gain satellite dish (well this size dish wouldn't fit into a van, on top maybe) anyway on with the story calibrated and such you could paint a rock in space at 25,000 miles and know what it is made of. Like you paint a airplane and tell from the return what type of airplane is out there using radar. However in this case you are using microwave for its proprtities.
The military uses something similar in communicating with airplanes some of the antena tested were up to 2000 verticle rods but in practical use 200 or less were needed to transmitt and reflect the signal to a localized area such as a jet airplane and cutting out you broadcasting a signature. One fun trick that was pulled was 2 ships that aproximated a carrier they swappies radio signal and other tattle tales and the carrier pulled away and left the 2 other ships and the carrier dissapeared into the night for suprised use in another location.
These things are all old stuff as 1990 so its nothing new/secret actually many of the times its my opinion that its the higher ups that blow the news such as senators etc.
But for finess I would use microwave and not a pipe EMP. Also if you built your own microwave generator you could in the future take off on testing devices to test for EMP/Tempest and if you designed buildings for tempest/emp there is some good money in it especially possibly in the future.
An upper atmosphere EMP could wipe out most every vehicle for transportation however most people didn't care much for a coffee topic till 911.

Taking out a section of a city is a stretch only possible with a selective piece of equipment going down from an EMP.

Sorry not true movie fiction
I read in Popular Mechanics that it doesn't take much techonology to make a EMP bomb. And cost like $300-400 for a substatial one. So what is stopping this bomb being implemented (besides the devestation it will cause). I know it will cause damge, but lets just say that some one ahd to use it, why hasn't anyone used this thing?
My point however being that I want a method for generation of emp, not an emp explosive, meaning not a a device which explodes but one capable of creating a steam, however short, of emp which would have a noticalbe effect. I do appreciate the emp bomb explanations, but I want to know if an emp generator is possible.
Mingon, The army IS looking into using EMP bombs. An EMP bomb can do more damaged than a traditional bomb. Go to Poular Mechanics website and look at back issues, one of the cover stories is the possible uses of an EMP. It is not fiction but rather fact. Have a look at a reputable site please, try www.janes.com. I dont have to say its fiction out of reading, i have spent 9 years working for the defense market and 2 of those years on EOD. Dont assume. The point is their is no active research into EMP bombs for the simple reason that their is an easy solution already available i.e nuclear, and the threat from someone using a nuclear emp is so slight that it not a consideration.
No. 1 Popular Mechanics is reputable, No. 2 The reason EMP bombs would be a better choice over nuclear weapons is that using a nuclear weapon creates global problems, when using an EMP the problem stays within the given radius. When a nuclear device is detonated, yes an EMP is generated, but also there is nuclear fallout, acid rain, and a global increase in radiation levels that can lead to birth defects, genetic damage, etc...

Emp may pose a problem but most vitals of our country have been hardened and sheilded against emp, but some of the lessers of electronics have not, which is why my interest focuses in the emp generator, a device which within a relatively short distnce could create emp bursts of a magnitude capable of having an effect on the electronics, in my theroy. I am wondering if there is a simple non-explosive, and hopefully reusable form which this can be achieved in.
As I mentioned it is an area which is not under consideration, since the early 80's the threat of EMP has been known and hence shielding in military equipment is very good. Whilst a emp bomb would knock out household appliances the aggressor would need to be of a terrorist nature with the capabilities to develop an emp weapon. The simple answer is that their is far worse weapons available than emp which would be used first o.e chemical / biological which cost less to develop. KraziKid PM me and I will explain further.

i actually used to have the documentation on how to do it in a word file, i was half done the project of making a 2 mile radius emp. it needed so much power that you would have to plug it into like 20 car batteries lol.

To make an EMP blast on the Megawatt Range. That will basicly shut down a city. What fun.
You take a copper hollow tube, and fill it with some kind of fast but even burning explosive.
TNT whould work, as it is a very consistant material. Then you wrap an insulator around the tube.
Then you would wind approx 10 gauge wire around that in arcs about 1" apart.
Connect the ends to a capacator set capable of releasing about 100f ( farads ) You would want to energize
the coil about 200ns before you detonate the explosive. This will create a kind of rolling short
circit between the copper tube and the energized coil. ( the coil will crate a Magnetic field in the coper tubing )
The Short circut will build on itself untill you run out of copper tube, and the magnetic field
will pe "pushed" along the tube, with an EMP as the result. Frankly, It will probably kill every
computer within 20 miles, with only a small explosion. Do not do this, as it will be very bad for
all man kind. If you do decide to try it, make sure to stand over it, so we can get rid of you
